Harry Gregson-Williams does it again!
I was first introduced to Gregson-Williams' work when I saw The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; the first thing I noticed about the film was its captivating score. I immediately bought it, and think it's safe to say that Gregson-Williams has oulled off another brilliant soundtrack with Prince of Persia! I was so excited when I learned that he was doing the music for this film - which I am SO excited to see!!! The music he has composed takes you right into the heart of the Middle East, with its rich, flowing opening theme that hooks you right from the start. And perhaps what I like most - other than the Middle Eastern influence, seeing as I am a HUGE fan of such music - is the fact that this score manages to remain light and herioc even in the more intense portions. And Alanis Morissette is FANTASTIC!!! This may become one of my all-time favorite soundtracks; a must have for any fan of intricate and beautiful music!!!
Good, but.....
I have to agree with some of the other reviews about this not being his best, nor his most original work. And I am a HUGE fan of his as well. I think some of his best work was on Gone Baby Gone, as well as Narnia. But this particular score just has too many similarities to other scores and composers like Zimmer. It's good music, but I was hoping for something a little more refreshing. I suppose he was tied into the middle eastern style and sound which may account for some of this, but I just didn't find any memorable themes that I could latch onto. it was just par for the course for an action movie. Still, Harry is one of my favorite composers up there with Thomas Newman, Josh Kramer and Alexandre Desplat. So I'm happy to support him regardless.
Good, but not original
I know most composers steal bits and pieces from other composers and you can only write so many original tunes, but I was a bit disappointed in this soundtrack. It's great music, don't get me wrong. I LOVE Harry Gregson-Williams and his music. The man is SO talented. The Prince of Persia soundtrack, however, has too much of other composers' music. It sounds A LOT like the 2nd Mummy movie score and it has some elements of Narnia (which Gregson-Williams did compose) in it. I also heard a bit of the score to the 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movie score. So, beautiful music, but not entirely original.
