Album Review

After the long layoff that followed their groundbreaking debut, Mommy's Little Monster, Mike Ness and Social Distortion dropped another seminal punk offering, Prison Bound, in 1988. Slower and more song-driven than their previous disc, this sophomore outing is an absolute triumph. The epic stories of hard living and regret that became Social Distortion's trademark fill Prison Bound's track list. Right off the top, the band adds Ghost Riders-like surf/country guitar riffs to "It's the Law," proclaiming a commitment to their rootsy punk direction. Cautionary tales like the title cut foreshadow future monster hits like "Ball and Chain" off of the group's self-titled 1990 release. Other highlights include "Like an Outlaw" and a raucous cover of the Rolling Stones' "Backstreet Girl." Fans of Social Distortion who have somehow neglected to pick up this gem are encouraged to do just that at their very first opportunity, as the list of West Coast punk offerings more influential than Prison Bound is extremely short.

its 1989 all over again!

sampling these songs makes me feel like im 16 yrs old again. This is the album i remember jammin in 10th grade, not the following Social Distortion self titled release. TIMELESS!!!

Best live band ever

This album is timeless & really shows off the artist that mike is. As always, if u haven't seen these dudes live - you need to go!!

Oh My God !

An early masterpiece ! A lot of people would probably say Mike Ness really hit his stride on the self titled album. But just listening to these samples blew me away and almost moved me to tears all at the same time! Like reviewer Oakland Tom said, This album really is timeless and it showcases Mike Ness as he was really taking off and gives the listener a glimpse of the artistry to come from Mike and Social D. I am a huge fan of Social D and Mike Ness solo and own everything ever put out but admit I dont have the first two (mommys Little Monster and this one). That has just changed as I proudly added these to my collection! Enough cannot be said about Mike Ness and Social D. Thank you for over thirty years of the best music, songwriting and live shows.

The enduring L.A. punk band Social Distortion has overcome numerous personnel shifts, the demise of the Los Angeles hardcore scene that spawned them, and the heroin addiction of singer/guitarist/bandleader Mike Ness to achieve a measure mainstream acceptance for their rootsy, hard-hitting punk without compromise. Inspired by the fertile L.A. punk scene, Ness formed the group in 1978 with drummer Casey Royer and brothers Frank (bass) and Rikk Agnew (guitar). When the brothers left to join the Adolescents,...
