iTunes Review
From clean-edged guitar romps to expansive cinematic pieces, Mark Knopfler has explored an exceptionally wide swath of creative terrain. Private Investigations brings coherence to his forays into rock, blues, folk and symphonic modes. It would’ve been easy for this collection to linger on his early Dire Straits releases – certainly the run from the irresistible “Sultans of Swing” to the era-defining “Money for Nothing” could yield over a dozen worthy tracks. Instead, it detours into Knopfler’s film soundtrack contributions (“Going Home,” “The Long Road”) to help provide a bridge into his ‘90s solo output. The rootsy “Why Aye Man” and the wry “Boom, Like That” give evidence to the singer/ guitarist’s continued 21st-century relevance. Private Investigations serves as a fine survey of Knopfler’s growth as a songwriter, capturing his insinuating wit and bedrock compassion. But it may be best enjoyed as a showcase for his protean guitar skills, at once tradition-based and sleekly modern in sound. Track for track, this is the best summation of his catalog available.
Customer Reviews
A Classic from a Classic
Not only do you get the 14 + minute version of Telegraph Road, but the long version of Money for Nothing (perhaps the best song of the Eighties). This more than makes up for the previous Dire Straits Greatest hits packages which did not include the long versions of these classics. Also, this is the only place where you can find Mark Knopfler's solo work in addition to the Dire Staits material. Perhaps the only omission is some of the colaborative work that Knopfler has done over the years, along with the Notting Hillbillies work. Knopfler is undoubtedly one of the greatest guitarists of this generation and this is an appropriate tribute to his body of work!
Private Investigations Digs deep and broad
Do you remember the first time you listened to Love Over Gold? A song - an album - where telling the full story in words and music supersceded any commercial concerns, and drew the listener deep into complex, intertwining guitar riffs, overlaid with meaningful vocals calling quietly for change in the face of foaming commercialism. This new compilation pulls the most intimate Knopfler aside the playful MTV-nod, the polished Sultan, the gritty vocalist and driving soloist. It is a joy to listen to this compilation - a must-have for those seeking a better understanding of Knopfler's genius. He still doesn't give a damn about any trumpet-playing band...
Private Investigation - It's ALL I Want!!
What an album. I have bee a fan for over 30 years. This Album has it all, including Telegraph Road. This is the band that defined Blues\Rock...It's all here the classics, and Mark Knopfler's instrumentals are incredible. If you are a DS fan this is the only album to have if you don't have any. It's complete, it's RIGHTEOUS!!
