Album Review

Comprised entirely of recordings Grace Jones made at Compass Point Studios during the early '80s, the double-disc Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions features 26 tracks, including two unreleased cuts and four previously unreleased mixes of hit songs. These are unquestionably Jones' best material, mainly because she was supported by a top-notch studio band and produced by Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. Several of these cuts work well, and there's no denying that any serious fans of her work will find this necessary. Less-dedicated listeners, however, are advised to stick with Nightclubbing, which is the best album to be culled from these sessions.

Customer Reviews

If you cannot appreciate the small gems here, you are missing it.

I adore Grace and the standards are here, all of them and I am happy for it. But! Standouts? Ring of Fire, La Vie en Rose, Use Me, Breakdown............come on, get it now and pay the price, it is worth every penny. Not to mention your friends will admire your sense of what is hot but not mainstream.

at her best

I must admit I am not a big Grace Jones fan. Her albums mostly desapoint me, either because the production is corny and really outdated or because she just seems to not fullfill my expectations, or maybe beacuse I like the Grace Jones personna than her records... But this album is precious, it is just right. The songs are really really bright and muscled in here. It is a best of, but a good kind of best of, a best of where the new clothing the songs were given make them intemporal.

One of the best albums ever

This is one of the greatest albums ever - I know there are some duplicate songs (different versions, though) but the recording quality and brilliance of her performances absolutely shine through. This is probably the album (set) I listen to the most often, and you just never get tired of songs like Pars and Feel Up. Ever.

Grace Jones was one of the more unforgettable characters to emerge from New York City's hedonistic Studio 54 disco scene during the late '70s. Born May 19, 1952, in Kingston, Jamaica, Jones studied theater at Syracuse University before launching a career as a model. Jones' statuesque and flamboyant look proved to be a hit in the New York City nightclub scene, which led to a recording contract with Island Records in 1977. While such disco-based albums as 1977's Portfolio, 1978's Fame, and 1979's Muse...
