Album Review

Certainly not for the faint of heart, Black Flag's instrumental work may seem to the naked ear to be atonal and uncomfortable, but there is a method to the madness. The Process of Weeding Out is an interesting document of Greg Ginn's development from high-speed guitar "sculptor" to one of the few punk artists to embrace 12-tone experimental music. A nice companion piece to the instrumental work on Family Man, but fans looking for strict hardcore should stick to the band's earlier work.

4 1/2 stars!!!

This IS the greatest instrumental ever made. But the only reason I give it a 4 (four and a half) is because without the vocals it gets a little old after a while. Amazing instrumental! DEFINITELY worth the money!!!!

Brutal Instrumental Work

When I was a kid, I absolutely hated the instrumental Black Flag stuff. Now that I am all grown up, this is some of my favorite stuff. I swear, this stuff, and the later Black Flag albums w/ Rollins were pure Doom rock. This is some great stuff if you like Ginn's playing.

Great! The One I Still Listen to Regularly

I picked this up used almost 10 years after it was recorded -- I'd always loved Greg Ginn's style and all the pre-Henry stuff most of all, but this instrumental album got under my skin and it's still what I'm most likely to listen to when I'm in the mood for Black Flag. Greg's liner notes are great too -- really sets the mood (in case the song titles and the Raymond Pettibon cover don't convey it already). Great basswork by Kira too.

In many ways, Black Flag was the definitive Los Angeles hardcore punk band. Although their music flirted with heavy metal and experimental noise and jazz more than that of most hardcore bands, they defined the image and the aesthetic. Through their ceaseless touring, the band cultivated the American underground punk scene; every year, Black Flag played in every area of the U.S., influencing countless numbers of bands. Although their recording career was hampered by a draining lawsuit, which was followed...
