Up and coming LA songwriter.
I heard Jose Promis over a year ago and was immediately impressed with his intelligent and imaginative lyrics. He has a French touch combined with a South American sense. Gotan Project reminds me of his work. "Barfly" is a beautiful song with humor and pathos; "Delusions of Grandeur" contains gems of satirical wisdom; and "Burned by the Sun" is touching. I think the day is not far off when his insightful and poetic songs will be part of a movie songtrack.
Intriguing Debut
Promis has a very European feel to it, with its predominantly dark sounds and charmingly world-weary vocals. Not that there aren't lighter moments ("It's A Fire!" perks up as noticeably as its titular exclamation point), but the overall atmosphere is one of minor chords and engaging ennui. Persuading listeners to navigate such territory, Promis manages to generate empathy and introspection while avoiding the pitfalls of cynical soapboxes or pity parties. Many songs such as "Barfly" and "The Street" convey a paradoxically isolated/universal experience by blending the intimate mood of a hermit's home recording with the emotional adventures of an exhausted international traveler (imagine Daniel Johnston producing Bryan Ferry). "Rust" closes with an experimental touch, revealing the last of a handful of electronic moments surrounded by the more minimal piano-diary effect of Promis.
