Album Review
If one knew nothing else about The Promotion, Alex Wurman's score would demonstrate that it is a well-meaning comedy in which no one, ultimately, gets hurt. First-time director Steve Conrad (screenwriter of The Pursuit of Happyness) employs John C. Reilly and Seann William Scott as rivals for the job of manager of a supermarket in Chicago. Wurman is no stranger to comic and lighthearted fare, with credits that include previous entries in the comedy universe of Reilly and his off-and-on partner Will Ferrell (Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy), though his most notable score in connection with this one may be his music for March of the Penguins. There as here, Wurman manages to be playful and engaging, employing an orchestra to play melodies and create sounds in a warm, engaging manner with a sense of fun. It all comes together at the end in a lengthy piano theme the title of which expresses resolution: "Four Handed Promotion."
Customer Reviews
Excellent music!
This album captures all the humor of the movie perfectly, on top of it, Wurman weave's fantastic melodies with interesting and quirky orchestrations. I highly recommend the album!
The other songs not on this soundtrack...
For anyone looking for the rock/pop/rap songs from "The Promotion" that supplement the Wurman score, they are: "Maneater" by Clair Marlo and her Orchestra (not available here); "Born to Move", CCR; "Tonight I Have to Leave It", Shout Out Louds; "She Belongs to Me", Via Audio (not available here); "Put Your Hands Up", P-Live (not available here); "Harness and Wheel", Kingsbury Manx; "Fly Like an Eagle", Steve Miller Band; "Rise", Public Image Ltd.; "Time for Me to Fly", REO Speedwagon; "Don't Be Scared", Andrew Bird; "Turn it On", Flaming Lips.
Too bad this movie isn't better known, because it's terrific.
Obviously this is not a "Soundtrack", read the title...
In regards to the people who are looking for the "Soundtrack", there are three things you need to know... there is a "Song Score" (music taken from an already existing artist that characters are not aware in the movie), "Source Score" (when the characters are aware of the music, playing from a physical object in the scene, jukebox, band, radio, etc...) and then there is an "Underscore" also known as, from the title, "Original Motion Picture Score". If you are looking for the top forty hit that you heard on the movie (or whatever...), make sure that you notice what the title says. Educate yourself and don't jump to conclusions to work that someone worked very hard on. I'm sure this movie would be totally different if no one had emphasized the comedy.
