Callisto's Best Yet...

I had listened to Callisto's first album, True Nature Unfolds, and was immediately blown away. With great anticipation I bought their second album Noir, but was quite disappointed with it. It took me quite a few listens separated by months in order for me to "get it." And "get it" I did. The album demonstrated quite an evolution from the previous one that was difficult to see at first. The same thing happened when I first listened to Providence. The most recognizable difference between this album and the previous two are the vocals: they're 95% clean. I couldn't stand them at first, but the vocals are used to great effect. These songs are some of the most elegant that Callisto has yet made, standouts including In Session, Covenant Colours, and Where the Spirits Tread. While old Callisto is recognizable, this really does sound like a new band. It may take a few listens to fully appreciate, but it's certainly worth it. I personally think it's the best album of the year so far, mixing heaviness with beauty like I've never quite heard before. Callisto has certainly proved that they can evolve for the better. They reached a level of maturity not seen in many bands by their third album.

not bad

but is that really rock?
