Customer Reviews
A great companion piece to "Provisions"
This kind of snuck out shortly after "Provisions" release this fall with no fanfare at all, not that a Giant Sand release receives much fanfare anyhow - only the occasional add in the music mags, and the even rarer review. I learned about it at the Giant Sand web site. This is a great companion piece to "Provisions" and I highly recommend it to fans of Howe Gelb and his many personas. Check out Dead Horse Blues in particular. If you're a fan, you won't be disappointed.
Pairs well with Calexico, Rainer Ptacek
Howe Gelb released this gem last year along with the sister recording he did with that British gal that did the duo with Mark Lanegan a couple years ago. (I have that download too.) Those two recordings go great together. I think the chronological order is Rainer Ptacek => Howe Gelb & Giant Sand => Calexico, so Howe Gelb is among the Holy Grail of Tucson rocker-artists over the past 20+ years. Ballad of the Tucson 2 (both cuts) and OK are the real rocker cuts, the first an homage to the suffering of so many illegal crossers that die in the Sonoran Desert and the folks that give them basic humanitarian aid. Way to go, look forward to some more good music by this artist, who's got a lot of fire left in his belly, judging from how his live performances and recordings seem to get better as time goes on.
