iTunes Review
It wasn't much of a stretch role by any means, but the 1992 film Pure Country featured George Strait portraying a chart topping country star who turns his back on the glittery and theatrical trappings of Nashville to re-embrace his less commercialized, honky-tonk roots. Ironically, Pure Country proved to be the best selling commercial release of Strait's career at the time. And as the title suggests, these songs are very much steeped in the roadhouse twang and weepy beer joint ballads that helped define the new traditional sound of early '90s hat acts. But with the boot stomping drive of "Where The Sidewalk Ends" and the George Jones inspired "The King Of The Broken Hearts," Strait also found a secret weapon in the songwriting of hit maker Jim Lauderdale, who until then was scraping by as a back-up singer for Dwight Yoakam and Carlene Carter.
Customer Reviews
One of George's All Time Best
George released two genuine, honest to goodness 5 star albums during the 1990s. Pure Country is one, Blue Clear Sky is the other. This CD, Pure Country features George in a more rocking mode than usual, but he does a great job on all these songs. I realize that there are a lot of 5 star ratings on iTunes; this deserves such a rating. Well over 15 years after its release, it still sounds great. I Cross My Heart is one of George's all-time most romantic love songs, The King of Broken Hearts is one of his all time best sad songs, and "Overnight Male" is a great song of sexual bravado, in the vein of "The Fireman." (Overnight Male is based on a silly pun "Mail/Male" but it easily overcomes this bit of cornyness). George rarely releases a bad album, but this is one of his best. If you are new to George Strait, I recommend getting a few of the of Greatest Hits CDs first, but then some of his next best albums include "Pure Country," "Blue Clear Sky," "It Just Comes Natural."
the best album ever made
My favorite song of this album is I cross my heart that song is the best love song ever made. George Strait is the best
That powerful!
My wife is an immigrant from Africa. She heard I Cross My Heart, before our wedding, and instantly this became the song she dedicated for our first dance. Though she doesn't have any "country" in her, this song still takes her to a place she never wants to leave.
