Album Review

A collection of re-recordings, remixes of re-recordings, and a couple original tracks from the lackluster Don't Be Afraid, Pure Energy: The Very Best Of is at best an easy way to collect all the compilation appearances Information Society did for the Cleopatra label. Those looking for the original recordings should seek out the band's recordings for the Tommy Boy label.

If there were a zero rating...

...I'd have used it on this one. This was made without the permission of any members of InSoc and is just a useless piece of garbage designed to make Cleopatra Records money. If you're any sort of a fan of InSoc, please do NOT buy this!!!!

An abbreviated mixed bag...

This collection has been slighted by many, and in many cases deservedly so. Several tracks on the physical release are missing from here - original tracks from "Don't Be Afraid" and their accompanying remixes from "Recombinant". From a collecting standpoint, the only tracks of any real interest here (assuming one already has the original "Don't Be Afraid" and "Recombinant" albums) are the covers of "Are Friends Electric?" and "Express Yourself". The Gary Numan cover is not the same version that appeared on "Don't Be Afraid", and features guest vocals from Gary Numan. The two versions of "What's On Your Mind" are new to this release, but neither is particularly strong - each also uses the re-recorded vocal featured on "Recombinant". A couple of worthwhile tracks, but mostly this release isn't worth the time.

AWESOME

my favorite info society release. It the best.

The group, a quartet formed in Minneapolis by James Cassidy, Paul Robb, Kurt Harland (aka Kurt Valaquen), and Amanda Kramer, signed to Tommy Boy Records a few years later and recorded a self-titled debut album. The single "What's on Your Mind (Pure...
