Customer Reviews
SEMINOLE early Latin Alternative / Traditional album!
The FIRST band I ever saw in College speak and sing about Chicanismo, and inspire thoughts, and dancing, and a sense of hope was Quetzal. This was the FIRST CD I ever bought at a show. I remember telling my girlfriend at the time all about them and taking her to see them. This album has been out of print for years, we highly recommend it. This is there debut CD and it's there best.
Comparitively speaking to most of the new US born Latin Alternative acts like La Santa Cecilia, this is the band that pioneered that sound.
genius
I paid $30 for a hard copy of this CD a few years ago on half.com so I'm happy to see that Quetzal's first CD is widely available.
Quetzal is quite possibly one of the best bands to ever come out of Southern California. So intellectual, philosophical, political, sociological etc. call them what you want, but they sure know how to develop truly deep lyrics, vocal power, and a combination of traditional Mexican music with their own. Is it necessary for me to even say that Martha's voice gives me chills after so many years? Listen to her final belt in "Chicana Skies," the best version of "El Cascabel" (yes, even better than Mariachi Vargas), and my favorite version of "Cruz de Olvido." The jarana and the violin? Quite simply amazing. This CD makes me miss the violin in Quetzal's music. Gabriel singing with Martha? Yup, miss him too...
Quetzal isn't about being Chicanos or Mexican. Quetzal is about becoming better human beings and growing through the process. Staying humble, being true to yourself, treating others with respect, staying true to your roots are all themes in this and other Quetzal CDs. Play their music and let yourself go.
GREAT DEBUT but...
They haven't come close to matching the magic in follow up efforts. GRITO de ALEGRIA and CASCABEL are standouts on this album.
