iTunes Review

Though she’s famously self-contained as a vocalist and pianist who is equally skilled at both instruments, Diana Krall has had an impressive history of collaborators. From guitarist Russell Malone to producer Tommy LiPuma to her husband, singer/songwriter Elvis Costello, Krall has teamed up with remarkably empathetic minds. For her new Quiet Nights album, she reunites with arranger/conductor Claus Ogerman (Frank Sinatra, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stan Getz) for the first time since her Live In Paris concert recording from 2002. Krall’s tenth studio effort includes not only lushly realized Brazilian standards (the title track, “The Boy from Ipanema”) and selections from the Great American Songbook (“Where or When,” “Everytime We Say Goodbye”) but smartly interpreted contemporary songs such as the Bee Gees’ “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.”

Lost Diana

I have been a long time fan of Diana and a big fan of samba. I was waiting for this album with great anticipation. As I listened to each track I began to notice how similar each one was to the other. Way too much orchestration. The best track is the live version of "So Nice" because it is much simpler and clean. Her voice seemed stressed, too high pitched and too whispery. It sounds like she is singing outside her comfort range. Listen to her earlier music and you will here the difference. I miss the low sultry tone. I am very disappointed. I hope the next album she will lose the orchestra and get back to her roots.

What a Disappointment!!

Where is the Diana we love!!! Please lose the strings and orchestral arrangements. I long for the jazz chops of the small quartet. I didn't realize the title of the album described every cut. Too slow, to safe and too boring. The second half is slightly better, but generally a disappointment Please Diana return to what made us admire your talent.

A Different Direction

A lot of fans are complaining about Diana's "new direction" but I don't believe this sound is forever. Diana simple wanted to create a themed cd and this release, the summer cd of the year by the way, is awash in strings and samba tempo's. The overall sound may sound similar but when has "I've Grown Accustomed To His Face" ever been re-arranged as a samba and sound so wistful? The re-invention of the standards and pop songs to a samba or bossa nova, especially the Bee Gees and the Beatles, should be looked upon as daring. This is Diana's first album after her hiatus and I for one am happy that she did indeed turn from small ensemble because her first albums were nothing but that, talk abut sameness. Frank Sinatra was afforded the chance to create themed albums, so the same can be said for Diana, I'm sure the next one will be very different. For now I'm going to enjoy Diana's calling upon Julie London's whispery style of sweet, sultry, and seductive.

Singer/pianist Diana Krall got her musical education when she was growing up in Nanaimo, British Columbia, from the classical piano lessons she began at age four and in her high school jazz band, but mostly from her father, a stride piano player with an extensive record collection.
