Nick Lowe has been making American roots-inflected music for decades now, morphing slowly from the seminal, ‘70s new wave scene to mature, intimate music reflective of middle-age experiences like fading flames, infidelity and loneliness. If you don’t know Lowe’s work, this is your starting point. And if you’re a fan who already owns 1989’s Basher: The Best of Nick Lowe, don’t let a few overlapping tracks stop you from acquiring Quiet Please… This new collection contains a true signature track, his earliest version of what became an Elvis Costello hit, “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.” You also get tracks like the beautiful and essential “Endless Sleep” and “You Make Me” from his earlier years. “Faithless Lover,” “The Beast In Me,” and “Shelley My Love” epitomize Lowe’s critically acclaimed work in the ’90s; his deep affinity for American roots music and his blue-eyed soul side are both exemplified on the last eight tracks, taken from 2001’s The Convincer and 2007’s At My Age. With Quiet Please…, a varied and exceptional musical career is truly well represented.

Tragically Underappreciated

I'll keep this brief. Nick Lowe is a national treasure, and although he has his share of diehard fanatics his excellent discography has largely been ignored by the masses and it's a damn shame. Since most of his albums are out of print this greatest hits comp will have to do. But the fine folks over at Yep Roc records have done an excellent job representing a good deal of his highlights from the 70's to present day. If you are already converted there won't be anything too shocking, and to tell you the truth I was hoping for a little more in the way of liner notes/packaging, but the music itself warrants a solid 5 stars. Buy this, then buy the newly remastered and expanded Jesus Of Cool then buy everything you can get your hands on from this dude. You'll wonder how you ever got along without him.

It doesnt get any better than this....simply as that!!

Toe-tappin' finger snappin' pure pop goodness!

I always felt that Nick Lowe's previous "best of" album left off so many great songs - especially since I had both "Pure Pop For Now People" (or "Jesus Of Cool" if you bought the original import lp) and "Labour of Lust". Well, problem solved! Even though Nick's popularity declined in the mid-eighties, he could still knock out a gem of a song when he wanted to. I'm so glad that "L.A.F.S." is on this collection - a true lost pop nugget. Check it out!
