R. Strauss: Lieder

Not What You're Expecting

     

The idea of recording Strauss orchestral songs is certainly not new, but this collection is still welcome, and even more so from an artist like Diana Damrau. Her treatment of text and sensitivity to words is most welcome here, even in the most commonly encountered songs. Lieder aficionados will note that Damrau has recorded all six of the Op. 68 Brentano songs, which is rare, but I am sorry to report that they are the most unsatisfying items here. Logic would seem to dictate that she would be most at home with these songs and their wide ranges and formidable technical challenges; however, even the impact of the stunning trills in "Amor" is lessened by lots of scoopy attack and squeezed tone. More surprising is how much Damrau shines in the simpler, lyric songs - "Freundliche Vision" is quite lovely and movingly sung, as is "Meinem Kind" and "Winterweihe". Even when she has to push to project over the heavier accompaniment, such as in "Als mir dein Lied erklang", she still makes wonderful music out of what would be awkward moments with any other artist. At about 70 minutes, it may be even a bit more Strauss than most can handle in one sitting, but still worth having as another souvenir of Damrau's fascinating artistry.
