In July 2002, Manu Chao performed a live show in Japan, ending a worldwide tour carried out with his band, Radio Bemba New System, a multicultural group consisting of ten talented musicians from different countries. From Jamaican reggae to Latin alternative pop/rock, including rock en español, hip-hop, flamenco, and French rock, The Live Album delivers a collection of hits from 1998's Clandestino, 2001's Ultima Estacion Esperanza, and Mano Negra's legacy, the Parisian rock outfit named in honor of an Andalusian anarchist group that served as Manu Chao's breakthrough in the music industry. In addition, the 29-track record features the previously unreleased "Bienvenido a Tijuana," "Rumba de Barcelona," and a version of the classic Afro-Caribbean-inflected hit "Blood and Fire." Recorded at Paris' Grande Halle de La Villette in September 2001, The Live Album is a multilingual and experimental live experience featuring the best of Manu Chao.

You should give this a listen

Even though you may find a lot of the music repetitive, Listen closely and you will find the incredible joy this band gives when they play. I saw them live in Bonnaroo 2007. It was amazing. The music is contageous. Higlights here: Machine gun, El viento, and the first Bienvenida a tijuana, and rumba de barcelona and clandestino. Manu Chao music is a state of happiness when you listen to him live. This cd brings you there.

A feast for the ear!

This is an amazing, super wonderful album! I found it by accident and Manu Chao is now one of my favorite artists of all time. He is multi-lingual and a musical genius. It doesn't matter if you don't speak the languages, but it might make you want to learn a few if you don't! My favorite song here is Clandestino; I love the vocals, the awesome percussion, the gorgeous guitar solo, and hearing the crowd go crazy. But all of the other songs here are equally lush, addictive and contain lots of wonderful surprises. This album is a total feast - disfrutalo!!

Live Music at its best

From the very calm and low key beginning Intro and almost nostalgic "Bienvenida a Tijuana" , to the party atmosphere of Promiscuity at the end, this album encompasses one of the very best live bands at its best. Manu Chao decides to not replicate his solo album sound and instead chooses to infuse his songs with a Punk, Ska, Reggae, Flamenco, and Rumba mash up that is unique in its energy and sound. Manu Chao manages to weave in and out of languages seamlessly and confronts relevant issues in a very honest and up front manner. There is no one currently touring quite like The Radio Bemba Sound System and every music lover should take the time to listen to live music at its most unique and exhilirating.

Manu Chao helped begin the Latin alternative movement way back in the '80s — although it had no name then — and in his later work he cut a cross-cultural swath across styles and geographic boundaries. Chao was born on June 26, 1961, in Paris to Spanish parents — his father, Ramon Chao, a respected writer, comes from Galicia, his mother Bilbao. Growing up bilingual, he was also influenced by the punk scene across the English Channel that happened while he was still in his teens....
