iTunes Review

This is the first release in the Radiolarians Series, a three album project that Medeski, Martin & Wood began in early 2008 and which follows a specific formula. The trio, which consists of keyboards, drums, and bass, would first write the outline of some songs, then take them on the road to be continually tweaked and refined, and then record the results shortly after each tour was over. As Radiolarians 1 demonstrates, it’s a winning concept for such an adventurous band because it captures the energy and unpredictability of their live shows. It also reveals their impressive range and depth. Opening with the otherworldly atmospherics of “First Light,” the album also features the loosely controlled frenzy and experimentation of “Cloud Wars,” “Rolling Son,” and “God Fire,” as well as the classic funk jazz that MMW does so well on songs like “Muchas Gracias” and “Sweet Pea Dreams.” There are also some pleasant surprises sprinkled throughout the recording, including some tasty acoustic guitar by Wood and haunting melodica passages by Medeski. Radiolarians 1 is further proof that there are few musical places where this prolific trio can’t, and won’t, venture.

always fresh produce

great album. i'm already looking forward to radiolarians II. the live recordings from these tours are unbelievable and i can't wait to hear how the next stuff turns out on record. this one definitely has some eastern music/john zorn influence. reminds me a little of zaebos. which is also hot. zaebos = john zorn/mmw combined = the work of god.

!

It is becoming hard to ignore the fact that these three guys are some of the most creative and talented artists of our day. Their understanding of eachother and their truly unique sound is masterful on any level. The improv is rich and the grooves are as tasty as ever. enjoy!

MM&W Radiolarians I

Although the album feels like it may have been thrown together differently than their previous recordings, Radiolarians shows MM&W in a great light, as avante-garde artists who are having a blast playing the "genre" that they pioneered. The single is winning and bright, while "Hidden Moon" and "God Fire" work together brilliantly to close off the album with a bouncy, yet aurally challenging fifteen minutes of music. Grab the album, grab the next two... this is a great project done by musicians who know how to communicate effectively. Great addition to their discography.
