iTunes Review

This is the third and final installment in the Radiolarians series, for which the band followed a specific formula for each release in turn: First, the keyboards/bass/drums trio compose songs or song sketches; next, a brief tour to refine the tunes in front of audiences; finally, immediately head to the studio to record the final results. Generally tours support released albums, but this about-face works well for Medeski, Martin & Wood, as proven by the quality of each of the three releases. Split about evenly between funky, introspective, and experimental tunes, Radiolarians III features the trance groove of “Kota,” Latin touches on “Walk Back” and “Jean’s Scene,” and a driving rock riff on “Undone.” There’s also the stellar “Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down,” which builds tension with a cascade of notes and quivering bass for two minutes before launching into a fuzz bass-driven reference to the melody on “This Train,” as the piano pounds out a gospel rhythm. After more than 18 years together the trio continues to push each other and create consistently intriguing, adventurous, and moving music.

WOW

Every single MMW is an absolute thrill, but the trio has really been getting down to the nitty-gritty with their "Radiolarians" series. These albums, all three of them, provide some of the most inspired studio work from this John, Chris and Billy. "Radiolarians III", though new and not yet fully digested, is already my favorite. It's not as earthy as "Radiolarians I", not quite as experimental and raw as "II", but this album is somewhere in between. I notice that this is the most piano-heavy album of the three, but John Medeski is such an inspired player, and part of me prefers his style when he's stripped down to the acoustic bare essentials. With each record, Chris Wood has become a more and more disciplined bassist. Billy Martin...he can't go wrong, and has very little room to improve because his playing ALWAYS blows me away. Fans NEED to get all 3 of these albums, because everyone will have a different favorite, but this is mine.

Always surprising

These guys are good!!! the combination of funk, "outside" playing, and pure jazz is so refreshing. Plus there is a sense of humor in their combined efforts. This is NEW music, played on the edge.

A group that effortlessly straddles the gap between avant-garde improvisation and accessible groove-based jazz, Medeski, Martin & Wood have simultaneously earned standings as relentlessly innovative musicians and as an enormously popular act. Emerging out of the New York downtown scene in the early '90s, MMW soon set out on endless cross-country tours before returning home to Manhattan to further refine their sound through myriad influential experimentations.
