Album Review

The "premier woman Piedmont blues guitar instrumentalist" is a wordy but accurate description of 87-year-old Etta Baker of Morganton, NC. One of the last pickers who was around when the music was first being recorded, Baker's 83 years of practice is manifested in these wonderful recordings of traditional folk ballads. One highlight follows another, and although "Brown's Boogie" trips up the album's gentle flow, the rest is front-porch perfect. This is music you never get tired of listening to. Newcomers to guitar should buy this album, both to marvel at the intricate technique and to amuse themselves with how frustratingly difficult it can be.

Customer Reviews

Beautiful in every way!

Mesmerizing, Etta Baker paints a perfect picture with every cord. Classic songs executed with amazing skill and sensitivity. Close your eyes and listen to the stories she tells, you can almost taste that mint julep and feel the sun in Tennesse.

Just plain great

This is some of the most unique and just plain great guitar you may ever hear. Ive listened to a good amount of blues and this isnt your standard blues licks. Its not standard anything, its just great, believe me, you want this album.

Baker, railroad bill.

What can one say that would explain the need for focus of crisp distinction. Baker not only delivers in a way like none other, her history and culture is brought to life with this fantastic cd. If you have never been to the carolinas she will take you there, none stop. Excellent.

Born in Caldwell County, NC, on March 31, 1913, she was the product of a musical family, taking up the guitar as a child and learning from her father and other relatives traditional blues and folk songs.
