iTunes Review
Railroad Earth performs Americana-tinged tunes that are never short on atmospheric touches. Singer-songwriter Todd Sheaffer writes unpretentious, straightforward songs that alternate between laying the beat down with drummer Carey Harmon or seeking a gentler solution from violinist Tim Carbone, mandolin player John Skehan and multi-instrumentalist Andy Goessling. “Long Walk Home” and “Black Elk Speaks” kick it up with the power of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and the ultimate Americana-rockers the Band. “Too Much Information” skirts around a vague New Orleans groove. “Spring-Heeled Jack” dips further into the gumbo. “On the Banks” swings as a sweet, modest ballad that is touching without falling into the trap of over-emoting. “Potter’s Field” evokes another time and place that Sheaffer obviously keeps in mind as he writes about the past with such clear-headed eloquence. Railroad Earth is a band of subtle degrees whose intricate performance skills add great depth to even the simplest of ideas and pack excitement into the most modest of tempos.

good stuff
saw these guys live and can't wait to hear these songs live as well. this album has just the right amount of jam and folk and its definitely worth buying the whole thing to get spring-heeled jack. it's on up there with mighty river and like a buddha in my opinion. buy this cd, its worth it
mhmm
oooohh gotta love railroad
C'Mon Railroad!
Seen the band multiple times and I am sorry to say but this album just doesn't make since to me. I don't know if it's the loss of J Grubb or the new record label, but for MY FAVORITE band...I believe this is a step in the wrong direction. Although it has railroads root songs on it, like lone croft farewell, and the finally studio released spring-healed jack jam session. I would say the songs as a whole just don't match up the the "railroad feel". Todd's lyrics are always going to be tranquil and worldly but the instrumentals in many of these songs are stepping back from the flowing river jam that railroad fans are all use to. I hope to stand corrected at the cains ballroom show in January. I have faith in the boys and us hobos will all be there to support them no matter what. Bring the heat fellas!!
