iTunes Review

Minnesota trio Children 18:3 wrap joyful melodies around serious messages on their sophomore album Rain’s ‘a Comin’. The punk/pop outfit dives into its songs with manic abandon, careening through verses into explosive shout-along choruses. A sense of impending change overshadows the album, made explicit in such Biblically tinged tracks as “Lost So Long,” “Cover Your Eyes” and the title number. “Oh, Honestly” and “Hey Driftwood (Tides)” touch upon more everyday romantic concerns, while “Oh, Bravo” measures the value of show biz fame against a father’s love. There are lighter moments as well, such as “The Cruel One” (a “tribute” to Disney villainess Cruella de Vil) and “Jack ‘O’ Lantern Dreams” (a sweet ‘n’ stinging punk waltz). The trio’s playing is in top form, with Seth’s kit-bashing drum work deserving special mention. Throughout Rain’s ‘a Comin’, Children 18:3 manage to recall the reckless delight of early X and Go-Go’s without obscuring the rock-solid faith that underpins their music.

Another Amazing Album

After their stellar and much heralded debut album, Children 18:3 is back with sky high expectations. So, does their sophomore album live up to the hype?

Rain's a Comin' is definitely a new direction for Children 18:3. Songs like "Cover Your Eyes" and "The Cruel One" would fit right at home on their first album, but others like "Hey Driftwood" and "Oh, Honestly" will make you stop and ask if you're really listening to Children 18:3. This isn't a bad thing. Some of my favorite songs on the album are the latter songs.

Rain's a Comin' starts with a bang after the all too short title track blasts past you and into "Cover Your Eyes", the lead single and my personal favorite song on the album. Then comes "The Cruel One", a song about the classic Disney villain Cruella de Ville. "Hey Driftwood" is a good love song (somewhat in the same vein as The City from the self-titled album), then "Oh Bravo" is next. It's a great song about a girl at a talent show who feels like her act just isn't as good as the other kids. "Oh Honestly" is a drastic change from anything we've ever heard from Children 18:3 but it's definitely an album highlight and proof that they have the skills to branch out.
The album ends with another highlight, "Lost So Long" which continues the album theme Rain's a Comin'. "Lost So Long" is a very mature song both lyrically and musically and is extremely catchy. Be warned, it will most likely be stuck in your head for quite a while afterwards. My only gripe with this album is the ragtime piano track "The Last Laugh". I would have preferred it just ended with "Lost" but it's not a bad track at all. It's better than nothing, I guess.

All in all I would recommend this album to anyone who likes clever tongue-in-cheek lyrics coupled with unique and crazy music. Children 18:3 has once again struck gold. Go download it now.

A Feast of Indie Rock & Roll

This has been one of my most anticipated albums for the past year. The homeschooled sibling trio had me hooked with their first album and quickly became one of my favorite bands. With the release of this album, they've secured the #1 spot. I had the pleasure of discovering this band quite a while ago and it has been very rewarding to watch them grow.
Like their first CD before it, "Rain's a Comin'" changes it's pace frequently. It will have your head banging furiously at break-neck speeds one minute with tracks such as "Cover Your Eyes" and "The Cruel One" and then give you a rest with some fun, up-beat songs like "Driftwood" and "Oh, Honestly". If you're looking for creativity, you will certainly find it here. If you're looking for a very unique group, look no further. The best way I think I can describe their style would be a merging of punk, 80's rock, and grunge rock, with tastes of other sounds sprinkled throughout. You just have to listen to see what I mean, so buy the CD and enjoy! Thank you for another great release, and ROCK ON Children 18:3!!!
