Album Review

Without reading the press materials, you might never guess that the solo debut from Sushiboro guitarist Dave Einmo (recording under the name Head Like a Kite) was inspired by the Super 8 home movies shot by his family in the late '70s, or even that sampled sounds from those movies served as the basis for many of these songs and instrumental compositions. What's much more obvious is his love of early-20th-century musique concrète and of early-'80s synth pop. "Words of a Friend" sounds weirdly like Jim Morrison being accompanied by Be Bop Deluxe-era Bill Nelson, while on "Your Butt Crack Smile" analog synthesizers and a Kraftwerk vocoder meet trashy glam guitar, with an outro lifted straight from the New Order book. "Interested in Worms?" staggers around on a weird 5/4 rhythmic structure, and "Noisy at the Circus" features a female vocalist who sounds uncannily like the Sundays' Harriet Wheeler. The album ends on a deeply sad note, with the gorgeously depressing "Scenes from the World Trade Center 1979." This is one of those rare albums that is both immediately accessible and strangely thought-provoking at the same time.

Noisy At the Circus drew me in...

....but Dave Einmo's talent kept me listening... Head Like a Kite...does what its name implies...it takes you on a trip of "biptropic" beats mixed with samples from Super 8 home movies shot in the 70's (Hence the name Random Portraits of the Home Movie). When I heard Noisy At the Circus, I was amused I enjoyed it and sought out more only to find that Noisy at the Circus is a stand alone track in an album that clearly focuses on mixing and the sound of the music itself more so then the vocals, which are often times not present. Random Portraits of the Home Movie is fresh and unexpected which makes for an all-together great sound and a true gem. I'm eagerly awaiting more from Head Like a Kite. *Key Tracks* Noisy At The Circus - Tell Mommy You Want a Sip of Beer - Injecting 10ccs of Temptation - Your Butt Crack Smile

Biography

Formed: Seattle, WA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Electronic music has the very real problem that to the uninitiated, it can all sound pretty much alike. So when an artist like Dave Einmo comes up with such an easy-to-grasp concept as that behind his project Head Like a Kite, it attracts listeners outside of the usual synths-and-beatboxes camp. The guitarist from Seattle's artsy indie rockers Sushirobo, Einmo was inspired to start Head Like a Kite when he came across a cache of super-8 films his parents had filmed while Einmo was growing up in the...
