Album Review

The second Tears for Fears album following Curt Smith's departure finds Roland Orzabal treading water (and self-consciously deep water at that). Long removed from the simple, melodic melancholy of the band's early work and abandoning the mid-period Beatles-influenced pop, Raoul and the Kings of Spain often borders on progressive rock. There's some genuinely pretty music, like the piano-driven ballad "Secrets," with its soaring guitar line, and the gentle "Sketches of Pain."

Is this album about his affair??

I just read the songs are about his affair that he was about to have or had - now the songs make sense and are very heavy. Sad and painful. I read - Choosing you is about - choosing his wife over his lover. God's mistake - his son and big ideas - the affair itself. And the lyrics to Sorry...oh my gosh...makes your heart feel so bad for him and his wife.

One great album - a must to own!!

This is such an amazing record, and a ton of credit must be issued to the man: Roland Orzabal. By 1995, he was continuing to shoulder the load by himself for the second straight album. I didn't think that TFF after Curt Smith could get any better than "Elemental," but Roland made that possible by making the Raoul album. Where to begin - the title track rocks, and sets the tone for the whole album. Rarely a miss out of all the songs; you can tell it's "different" compared to the 1983-89 days with Curt. Times change and so does the "sound." Sure, many of us were saddened with the breakup. Curt was great when they were together and it's nice to see that they are back together again. This sounds nothing like the wonderful 80s releases but that's a good thing.....and there is nothing wrong with that. It just makes sense for the time it was released. The haunting yet comforting tones of "I choose you" and both "los reyes catolicos" tracks are simply amazing. Sketches of Pain, God's mistake, Secrets....all amazing songs. "Me and My Big Ideas" is now one of my favorite TFF songs- ever. If you were ever skeptical about TFF in the 90s (without Curt Smith) please give this album a spin. An underrated treasure. Roland, you've done it again.

Brilliant

Jo had it right: 'an overlooked masterpiece.' I can't say how brilliant it is, and it's a shame that so few people seem to know about it. Achingly beautiful.

Tears for Fears were always more ambitious than the average synth pop group. From the beginning, the duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith were tackling big subjects — their very name derived from Arthur Janov's primal scream therapy, and his theories were evident throughout their debut, The Hurting. Driven by catchy, infectious synth pop, The Hurting became a big hit in their native England, setting the stage for international stardom with their second album, 1985's Songs From the Big Chair....
