iTunes Review

Repping for both coasts, The Alchemist has been making music since his teenage years, growing up in Beverly Hills and getting down with the Soul Assassins collective as a member of short-lived kid-rappers the Whooliganz. Mentored by DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill, House of Pain, etc), he paid dues for years, crafting beats in anonymity before really bubbling up in the late ‘90s, when he started getting shine for his work with Dilated Peoples, Mobb Deep, and Capone-N-Noreaga, among others. Al's compositions are known for their cinematic feel — lush arrangements, slinky basslines, hard drums and dark synths — and he has since become a superstar in his own right, concocting hits for G-Unit, Snoop, Eminem, and countless others. Rapper's Best Friend features 14 instrumentals from his massive discography, conveniently stripped free of all rhymes and choruses, ideal for fledgling emcees to test their mettle. Most impressive are "Gun Check," "Bring You Light," and the Barry White chop-job "Stop Fronting."

It's Funny.

Maan it's funny. I pitched a album just like this to record labels 12 years ago and they said, IT WILL NEVER WORK! Time changes everything fo sho. To the man behind the beat, You Go!. Show them that MC's do need beats for thier ryhmes. Dj's do need beats without lyrics. People need to hear what beat making consist of. It's not just sampling. It's hard work.

Nice batch

Alchemist has some classic beats, sometimes he's off, but mostly nice old hip-hop feel. Keep at it Alchi!

Best producer in the game right now

seriously Alchemist ranks right up there with Dr. Dre & Kanye West... Pete Rock, all the greats. Production is one of the more underrated qualities of rap (unless you're talkin about the south where it's all about the beat), and Alchemist is the best i've ever heard. The real Back Again with Dilated Peoples is an amazing song as are about every other one here.

Ignoring the coastal feuds that dominated hip-hop for most of the '90s, the Alchemist (born Alan Maman) began his career in L.A. (he grew up in affluent Beverly Hills) and ended up in New York City. As a teenager, as part of the duo the Whooliganz (with Scott Caan, son of James) and the greater rap collective the Soul Assassins (with Cypress Hill, House of Pain, etc.), he released the single "Put Your Handz Up" on Tommy Boy in 1993, though the Whooliganz' debut full-length, Make Way for the W, was...
