iTunes Review
Anita Baker's second album, Rapture, arrived with little fanfare. Initially admired by a sliver of the music-business community, she could hardly have known that the album would wind up a multi-platinum favorite, making her a superstar and a symbol of the era's R&B. A seductive classic whose jazz flavors brought it another dimension of musicality, the 1986 release's precision was matched by Baker's deep-throated vocals on the likes of "Sweet Love," which became perhaps the record's most emblematic hit. Despite the joy of that track and "Caught Up in the Rapture," not everything here was bliss: Hear "Watch Your Step," a warning to a mis-stepping man. Instead of filling the song with histrionics, Baker delivers it with a reserved tartness that suggests '40s romantic comedies as much as classic soul.

Wonderful R&B album
by FG79I've been a fan of pure R&B music....the smooth melodies, warm basslines, melodic arrangements, and good vocals.
This album delivers on all fronts.
1) Sweet Love - The definitive track on this album with that legendary intro, mesmerizing vocal in main song & chorus....the clear long term gem of this record and maybe Baker's career as well.
2) Bring Me Joy - A nice slow, laid back song....perfect to relax to.
3) Caught Up in the Rapture - I read a review that said if Steely Dan wrote a real R&B love song it would sound like this. Couldn't agree more.....very nice arrangement and songwriting here.
4) Been So Long - A song where you can feel the true emotion of being separated from your lover.
5) Mystery - A remake of Manhattan Transfer's "Mystery", a song originally written by the legendary Rod Temperton (songwriter behind numerous Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Brothers Johnson, George Benson hits, etc)...this is probably my favorite song here.
This is one of those songs that build gradually to a climatic chorus, without disappointment. I'd say that this is a smoother sounding version compared to the original except for the lack of a sax solo in the last chorus, and phrasing in the chorus not quite as powerful as done by Manhattan Transfer.
Still wonderful.
6) No One In the World - Another great love song similar to "been so long" in terms of that powerful connection to one other individual. The last 40 seconds are a nice treat of bassline and guitar solo...just little touches that make good songs wonderful.
7) Same Ole Love - Listening to this song really harks back to that '80s sound, particularly the chorus. You can listen to it over and over again...
8) Watch Your Step - Probably the only song on the album that I'm not a huge fan of.
"Rapture" is clearly one of those albums which were meant to be one solid piece of work not an ensemble of singles. As an audiophile the sound quality here is wonderful....an added bonus.
I own this album on CD & Vinyl, and the sound quality on the latter is amazing.

by flagleriteThis album is a masterpiece. My blood pressure goes down when I push play. I'm listening to it right now. I was a bus boy in a restaurant (Boston Cooker) back in 1991 in Clearwater, FL and they played this all the time and it just got in my DNA. I have loved this album for almost 20 years. I love every song.
Female Vocalists
by mrbillmanThere aren't many female vocalists that can compete with Anita Baker. Perhaps early Whitney, and (at the outside), maybe even Chaka on her best days. Jill Scott, and India.Arie come close but none can excite the soul the way Anita can. When she grabs hold, believe me, "It's on".
