iTunes Review

Recorded at the peak of the band’s powers in December of 1972, Raunch ‘N’ Roll Live finds Black Oak Arkansas spreading their greasy Southern gospel to theaters in Portland and Seattle. Whether it was because they were in the liberal territory of the Pacific Northwest or because their sound was being brought to a white-hot boil, this live album takes what Black Oak did on record and makes it sharper and sleazier. Black Oak’s saving grace was that they never took themselves too seriously, and they never made pretensions to making high art. Their sound was dedicated to people who loved racing muscle cars and throwing keggers in the woods. Band leader Jim Dandy plays ringmaster, his Ozark twang jumping from Howlin’ Wolf’s growl to Robert Plant’s scream. A prowling, thrusting take on blues, “When Electricity Came to Arkansas” was the band’s anthem, but it's the blistering performances of “Getting’ Kinda Cocky” and “Hot & Nasty” on which Black Oak staked their reputation. For all of Led Zeppelin’s influence over the younger generation, the concept of swashbuckling big-arena rock’n’roll starts here.

Customer Reviews

Half of a track?

Black Oak has a loyal following and their music will certainly make the right person happy, BUT I FEEL CHEATED! You can't sell "Hot Rod" without the lead in. How can you sell just half of the track???? I want my money back.

Good Live Album

Black Oak had an un-even career to say the least. However, none of that is evident on this release. Raunch N' Roll is to BOA what Alive was to KISS; the definitive live document of each band. The lineup on this record is easily BOA's best. For you drummers out there, if for no other reason, buy this record and enjoy Tommy Aldridge's tasty double-bass licks. You truly hear the standards of rock double-bass playing being established on this record. The guitar playing is also first rate with many harmony parts. In summary, what makes a live album great is its ability to capture the energy of the crowd and the band feeding off of that crowd. Raunch 'N Roll does that.

Cheated as well......

Why would you sell part of an album? Listened to it twenty times before I realized it (intro to Hot Rod) was not on the album. This is what drives people to download pirated music. Someone at iTunes should take it upon themselves to make sure the the integrity of original album is kept in tact!!!!!!!

Biography

Formed: 1970 in AR

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s

Southern rock veterans Black Oak Arkansas never quite achieved the level of success enjoyed by contemporaries like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers, but have remained a cult band thanks to their raw, primitive energy and the testosterone-fueled antics of lead vocalist/showman James "Big Jim Dandy" Mangrum. Named for Mangrum's hometown, Black Oak Arkansas eventually built up a solid following through incessant touring and enjoyed a run of ten charting albums between 1971 and 1976. The band also...
