Album Review

Perhaps Holland's premier death metal act, God Dethroned re-emerges here with another album boasting absolutely stellar musicianship, airtight engineering, and song craftsmanship. What is most interesting about Ravenous is not the way in which it showcases God Dethroned's skill in speeding through mind-bendingly fast grind and death metal beats, but the way it demonstrates the band's ability — like a car traveling at 100 mph, then stopping on a dime — to cut the tempo and veer into soaring, harmonized leads, the kind of leads championed by power metal acts like Iron Maiden and Saxon. However, like Slayer, Morbid Angel, and the Haunted, God Dethroned excels primarily in the realm of fast, fast, fast death metal, and Ravenous, like Bloody Blasphemy before it, is a prime example of excellent metal work that is not overdone, either lyrically or musically.

The Epitome of Excellence

Who cares about Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir when you have gems such as God Dethroned and their hit, Ravenous? CoF's been going downhill since they made that atrocious Damnation and a Day album, and Borgir has too much symphony in their later works. Anyways, Ravenous is their third best when compared to Grand Grimoire and Lair of the White Worm. This album has some of the best riffs I've ever heard and the long guitar solo on Iconoclast Deathride is sheer beauty. Villa Vampiria is an excellent headbanging song while The Posion Apple is just funny (lyric wise), and the song Ravenous is achingly good. I won't go into too much depth with this album as it's up to you to decide if you like it or not. This is one of my all time favorite GD albums, especially since it's the one that got me hooked on God Dethroned in the first place.

.....

This is a great album. Probably GD third best behind The Toxic Touch and Bloody Blasphemy. Patrick Horton i thought i would let u know that Cradle Of Filth and Dimmu Borgir are both BLACK METAL BANDS not Death Metal.

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Dutch death-metal band God Dethroned was formed in 1991 by vocalist Henri Sattler with several friends (credited only as M. Beukeveld, M. Arends, and A. Dijkstra); they recorded a demo and got the opportunity to release an album on the small German label Shark in 1992. Titled The Christhunt, it did little commercially, and God Dethroned went on hiatus the following year, with Sattler forming a new group called Ministry of Terror. Following that band's 1994 album Fall of Life and a supporting European...
