iTunes Review

There are a few San Francisco bands successfully fusing lo-fi punk with '70s bubblegum, but Nobunny's Justin Champlin (the man behind the decrepit bunny mask) knows how to mix in a heaping spoonful of ambiguously creepy undertones without going full pervert. The opening cut of Raw Romance is a perfect example. “Your Mouth” is a contagiously catchy song that could have been sung in quasi-innocent earnest by The Osmonds or The Bay City Rollers, but when a weird longhaired guy croons it through a distorted bullet microphone while wearing the kind of soiled kids' mask that would give Harmony Korine nightmares, it becomes a wonderfully disturbing sort of art. “Apple Tree” teeters more on the side of creepy as Champlin quotes the “it puts the lotion on its skin” part of The Silence of the Lambs over an acoustic ditty with sing-along melodies and playful glockenspiel embellishments. Even a cover of the 1926 Gene Austin tune “Tonight You Belong to Me” (as popularized by Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters in The Jerk) gets humorously bastardized.

Nobunny loves you

I bought this album on the strength of Nobunny's last release "Love Visions", without hearing a single track. This album does not disappoint, it is perhaps a softer album, but still imbued with Nobunny's insane garage punk sensibility. If you ever get the chance to see Nobunny live, do not pass it up. Highly recommended.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Allin. Nobunny is the alter ego of Justin Champlin, who was born and raised in Tucson, AZ, and relocated to San Francisco, CA. Champlin...
