Album Review
This high-water mark by the band finds them softening their rougher edges and stretching out into jazz territory, yet still retaining a blues foundation. There's not a bad cut here, with enough variety (bottleneck slide, acoustic guitar, horns, and strings) to warrant frequent late-night listenings. "A Hard Way to Go," "Needle and Spoon," and "Stay While the Night Is Young" are especially strong, as are two instrumental numbers. Unfortunately, leader Kim Simmonds lost his greatest asset when vocalist Chris Youlden quit for an ill-fated solo career after this recording. Youlden had one of the most distinctive voices in British blues, and Savoy would never fully recover from his exit.

Raw Sienna
Freshman year at Univ. of Wyoming, 1975. Portable turntable with two earphone plug-ins. Play Gin all night with dorm roommate Bill from Chicago. 2cents a point. Winner chooses music. His favorite, Led Zepplin 4. My choice, Savoy Brown. This record. I dug the instrumental tracks (Kim Simmonds jazz guitar on "Is That So"). Now, as 50+ with gray, listen almost exclusively to jazz. It was worth the cost (ended up giving Bill my 1963 Ford Falcon to payup $200 Gin debt).
Where is track 1??
I owned this album in the early 1970's and have probably listened to it thousands of times. Every song is excellent. But I agree with the previous reviewer - Where is the first track? "A hard way to go"?? I must have the entire album so must purchase elsewhere.
Are You Kidding Me????!!
Why is this one tune short of being the whole album, especially when the tune missing is such a good one ("A Hard Way to Go" )?? I bought this back around 1970. It was a favorite for quite a while... I'm really looking forward to hearing it again-But apparently not from iTunes-I've got to have it all!
