Album Review

Bush were criticized from most quarters of the music press for sounding too much like Nirvana on their debut album, Sixteen Stone, so in order to shed all of the comparisons, well, they hired producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey) and proceeded to record their own version of Nirvana's dark, difficult In Utero. Actually, Razorblade Suitcase, Bush's second album, cribs heavily from two of Albini's best productions, In Utero and Pixies' Surfer Rosa — they even hired Vaughan Oliver, the designer behind Surfer Rosa, to do the artwork. Albini helped make the band sound tougher by stripping away the layers of effects and concentrating on a hard, driving rhythm and stop-start dynamics. Although lacking in memorable hooks, Razorblade Suitcase is more pleasing and visceral on the surface.

Time heals all wounds

I remember this album in highschool. Basically, it was panned because it didn't sound enough like sixteenth stone. But after all these years, I actually kind of miss it. So I'm giving it 4 *'s. Its songs weren't as memorable as their debut's but on listening to it as a whole, it works.

Almost

Many people perceive Razorblade Suitcase as Bush's In Utero because it is less far less mainstream. Bush certainly caught it's fair share of flak after Sixteen Stone because critics said they were emulating Nirvana. Bush apparantly took this personally and decided Razorblade was their chance to set them apart by developing their own sound; they succeeded, sometimes for better sometimes for worse. The tour de force that was Sixteen Stone differs sharply from Razorblade Suitcase because RS's tempo is much slower. The tracks that were affected negatively from this change in style are Cold Contagious, Straight No Chaser, Communicator, and Bonedriven. They are far too slow to be engaging. Unfortunately I just listed half of the albums singles in that list. Straight No Chaser, Communicator, and Bonedriven start out soft and never pick up and Cold Contagious picks up at 2:50 if you're still listening congratulations. However the rest of the album is actually great. It features the hit single Swallowed which is without a doubt Bush's best song and one of the best from the 90's, which is a pretty bold statement. It disappoints me how Bush can sound so spectacular on most of the songs and so dull on the others. They almost made another classic- almost. Key tracks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9.

Bush--You can put a razorblade in my suitcase!

Ha. Great sound, I love his voice. Bush has always been awesome to me. I didn't think Sixteen Stone sounded Nirvana-esque, but that could just be me. People just say that cuz Nirvana came first. And they dominated! They still do! But unless another band is a carbon copy and and you can clearly hear the sameness, there should be no question. Bush sound a little stoner-like at times, but yeah, Razorblade suitcase is definitely more polished. Great album!

Biography

Formed: 1992

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Led by guitarist/vocalist Gavin Rossdale, Bush became the first post-Nirvana British band to hit it big in America. Of course, they became a hit by playing by the grunge rules — they had loud guitars, guttural vocals, stop-start rhythms, and extreme dynamics. Formed in late 1992 by Rossdale, Bush...
