Album Review
With Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst wears his languishing heart on his sleeve, channeling his most personal emotions via intense acoustic-based indie rock. The talented young songwriter seems ready to burst out into something noisier, and he gets that chance with Desaparecidos. On Read Music/Speak Spanish, the band rocks out with more of an emo edge, typified by blaring guitars and raging vocals. With fellow Omaha guitarist/songwriter Denver Dalley, bassist Landon Hedges, keyboardist Ian McElroy, and drummer Matt Baum (Baum and McElroy have toured with Bright Eyes, while Hedges plays in labelmate the Good Life), the group critiques American materialism and consumerism. Songs such as "Greater Omaha" and "Mall of America" resonate with sincerity, while Oberst's vocals quiver and scream about money and society. With such a convincing voice, there's never a time when his lyrics are less than earnest. This debut full-length was recorded in one week, which, as a result, adds to its unabashed rawness.

Conor Oberst is God.
This man knows how to make music. Bright Eyes is an amazing band, and Desaparecidos brings out the rockier, noisier edge in him, yet it loses nothing in translation. It doesn't devolve into just yelling and banging, it still holds a message, as does all of his other work. For anyone who isn't a fan of Bright Eyes' slow melodies, cursed though you be, I think you'll find this a delight.
just freaken great
Oberst is amazing! If you like what he has done in Bright Eyes, but your in the mood for something harder Desaparecidos is for you. The politicaly, and economicaly driven music is for fans of any thing Oberst, and bands such as Cursive and Small Brown Bike. If you are into bands like Against Me for what they sing about rather than just cause its cool you'll love this album.

Listen to Bright Eyes' stuff before you pick up this album. You'll be able to appreciate ten times more if you do. This record is loaded with everything that Bright Eyes, but with a little edge... Each song is compelte and filled as an experience in itself. Littered with a poetic commentary on everything from the religion to relationships, it spins of brilliance with every chord. The arrangements are complete and well composed within each song, yet together compile a quite unique and blessed record. It's amazing.
