iTunes Review
Pavement had given Stephen Malkmus the perfect forum for his anecdotal stream-of-consciousness lyrics and laissez-faire delivery. His progressive and classic rock influences juxtapose nicely against his no frills sonics (a wah-wah pedal is his primary indulgence) and his free-spirited and shameless background vocals that recall girl-group pop in their whimsy. Real Emotional Trash works best at its most compact. The simple catchiness of “Out of Reaches,” the New Wave-inflected “Gardenia” and the psychedelic brood of “Cold Son” are like quick snapshots of the influences running around Malkmus’ musical vocabulary. The ten-minute title track serves several different masters, beginning with a trudging Velvet Underground rhythm that eventually smoothes out into a highway cruise, while the six and a half minute “Baltimore” includes a few twisty instrumental passages that suggest someone’s been listening to Jethro Tull. Malkmus has never been shy about cutting and pasting from wherever it suits him.

Clever Man, Very Clever Album
From day 1 with Pavement and the release of "Slay Tracks" we have seen Stephen Malkmus grow and have all grown with him. All his solo releases (or Jicks releases) have shown the same growth and strength as any, and all, of his previous albums. Real Emotional Trash continues to show just how clever a song writer he is and how strong his songs can be. You may not get any 3 minute catchy tunes with seriously strong pop hooks, but what you get is superbly well written, amazingly structured, beautiful tunes that make you go back and listen for what you missed the 1st time, then 2nd, then 3rd...... "We Can't Help You" may be the most complete tune That Malkmus has ever written, and possibly one of the best. What a great album for us to listen to as we wait out the end of winter and look forward to the spring.
Fans of Real Music Rejoice
Once again, Mr. Malkmus proves why he is a indie rock legend and, dare I say, God. While the vast majority of today's artists are musicians who aspire to be poets, Malkmus is a true poet AND an accomplished musician. In a sea of mediocrity and the myopic pursuit of commercial success, Malkmus continues to make brillant, beautiful music on his own terms. Cold Son and the epic Real Emotional Trash are highlights of this fantastic album. While the sound has taken a turn from that of Face the Truth, the catchiness and witticism have remained constant. Fans will not be disappointed!!
SM's best album
If you were more a Pavement fan, then you'll know what I mean. Doesn't sound like Pavement, but it's got that same mojo. Don't know how else to put it. Hopscotch Willie...brilliant. Real Emotional Trash, probably my favorite track. Sounds like it could have had a home on Wowee Zowee. SM...a genius!
