iTunes Review

The debut release by this New Jersey-based quartet is filled with dreamy, drowsy pop that settles in easily. These 10 songs have a vaguely familiar ‘60s West Coast pop feel to them, and the vibe is backed up by multiple lyrical references to the beach along with sunny harmonies and a classic warbled surf guitar sound. The production is shimmering and hazy with ample reverb and subtle psychedelic touches highlighting the interplay between the guitars and wrapping the barely audible vocals in a warm glow. Chiming guitar figures propel the catchier numbers like “Beach Comber,” “Fake Blues,” and “Green River” while “Suburban Dogs” and “Suburban Beverage” lope along lazily. There’s also a pair of well-placed, bright instrumentals (“Atlantic City,” “Let’s Rock the Beach”) that help tie it all together. Overall, the album is a laidback affair that keeps its head above the waves thanks to some infectious melodies. A charming first effort from a band to watch.

Pleasant Surprise

Right when I heard this album I immediately purchased it. It's just a great album! I suggest you buy it. I love the calm surfer feel to it. I guess they don't like living in the East Coast 'cause they sound so much like the West. Also, thank you Pitchfork, because I found out about this band because of you.

Great Album But:

This is a very good album and I like that an east coast band is making west coast-esque sounding music better than west coast bands but to everyone who is so stoked they found them on pitchfork, you should probably not give them so much credit. There are way better music review sites than pitchfork. I mean, monumentally better sites that aren't biased to the point of if the band doesn't use ancient african tribal drums, or forks and knives to make sounds they wont get above a 3.5. Do yourselves a favor and look beyond pitchfork or heres a novel idea: look for new bands yourself and don't try to find a band that's being hyped on a review site such as pitchfork. It's stupid that people think they are a real authority on any type of media. Great job Real Estate, this is a really solid album. I didn't find you on pitchfork.

Incredible Band!

I too, discovered this band on Pitchfork after the site gave this band very good reviews on this album. I can say without a doubt I love this album to death. I'm such a big fan of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and anything 60s. I'm also a fan of the American 60s Rock scene, particularly CCR, Jefferson Airplane, and of course, the Beach Boys' iconic pop sound. There are influences from every aspect of rock you can find. But of course, the feeling that comes initially is the calm, beach sound. I think this album is a wonderful addition to anybody's collection of rock CD's. This will become a classic in no time, and it's perfect for mellowing down after a hard day's work.

New Jersey's hazy indie rockers Real Estate feature Titus Andronicus' Martin Courtney, Etienne Duguay (who also records as Predator Vision), Alex Bleeker, and Matthew Mondanile, also of Ducktails. The foursome had played together in bands — including a Weezer cover band — during high school, but didn't become Real Estate until Courtney returned to the Garden State after attending college in Olympia, Washington. After forming in summer 2008, the band began playing live that fall and released...
