Album Review

As the ringleader of Fake Problems, Chris Farren strikes more than a few similarities to Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst, particularly in the way both songwriters mix emo with traces of alt-country. Real Ghosts Caught on Tape seriously downplays the twang of Farren’s other albums, though, replacing it with a new emphasis on buoyant pop and the sort of energetic, heartland punk-rock championed by the Gaslight Anthem. This is still the Farren show, but kudos also go to producer Ted Hutt, the same man who recorded Gaslight Anthem's two breakthrough albums. Hutt knows how to couch his clients’ punk tendencies in other genres, from Gaslight's Springsteen-styled anthems to Flogging Molly’s Celtic workouts, and he does the same to Real Ghosts. With its cowpunk guitars, ‘60s pop harmonies, and indie rock chord progressions, this is essentially a tour through all of Fake Problems’ influences, and a fairly tuneful tour at that.

bleh

i wanna like this band i really do. but these songs are lacking energy and soul. they sound like they would eat peanut butter sandwiches with vampire weekend after picking up some sweet deals at the Lacoste store.

So Stoked on This!

This record is rad so far! I was looking for something gaslight/against me!-esque and this is spot on so im psyched. definitely check out Fake Problems if you havent before.

Great Band.

I just saw these guys perform half the album acousticly on Wednesday. I know alot of people don't like it because it's "Not punk enough" or not "indie enough," but quite honestly I don't believe either of those. If you really like the band then pick up this CD, you won't be disappointed. Some of my favorite tracks: Ghost to Coast, Songs for Teenagers, 5678, and Soulless. And if you happened to get a chance to see the band live - do it. They're a really nice group of guys and fun to talk to.

Originally planned as a solo project for vocalist/guitarist Chris Farren, Fake Problems are a four-piece band hailing from the Southern coastal vacation town of Naples, FL. The guys played around locally, burning their...
