iTunes Review
With the release of 1983’s seminal Swordfishtrombones Tom Waits walked away from the piano-bound Bukowski persona that he worked throughout the ‘70s and never looked back. With each album that followed, Waits, with the assistance of songwriter and spouse Kathleen Brennan, plunged further and further into a disorienting world of distorted junkyard blues, Beefheartian flights of improvisational fancy, and wildly sketched characters drawn from the fringes of the subconscious. 2004’s Real Gone sees Waits expanding on these themes with a steely-eyed sense of purpose born of post 9/11 despair and disillusionment. “Hoist That Rag”, an unholy guitar racket powered by a relentless Cuban rhythm, is an uncompromising indictment of abuses of power performed in the name of patriotism, while “Sins of My Father” is an extended meditation on inherited guilt. Throughout Real Gone Waits is accompanied by a host of exceptional players, foremost amongst them guitarist Mark Ribot, who coaxes a remarkable array of screeches and groans from his instrument, imbuing Real Gone with a confrontational grit not seen on a Waits album since 1992’s Bone Machine.

Tom Waits just getting better and better
I believe that this is the best Waits album out now. The whole album is incredible and if you like Tom at all this is a must have. I strongly suggest buying this album
Real Gone
Not my favorite Waits album, I think it may suffer from a little too much indulgence in involving the entire family in the production process, but its got some great songs on it all the same. I saw him live about a month ago and he really brings some of these songs to life. I'm kind of wondering though, if all of the yelling and megaphones is a sylistic change... or if he's finally lost his singing voice. Make it Rain is one of the greatest songs of the last 10 years, it grabs you down deep. Pretty good, but I don't think he's going to make it back up to the quality of some of the stompers on Mule Variations again anytime soon.
Not the Best, But Only on the Waits Scale
Some say this isn't Waits' best recording, and they'd probably be right. But if anyone else in the world made this record, it'd easily be the achievement of a lifetime. To the reviewer who thought Waits-Worship was an empty attempt at indie cred, all I can say is "Who on EARTH would ever combine Tom Waits with jogging?!?!?" If there's one thing in the world that's the antithesis of Waits' earthy, soul-rattling, bone-breaking sound, it's the plastic perfection sought by "joggers." Judge the music, not the fans. And THIS music will withstand scrutiny any day. "Sins of My Father," "Make it Rain," "How's It Gonna End," and "Hoist that Rag," (among others) are instant classics that sound as if they were forged in the furnace of history...not creations of the new millenium. No other artist has a body of work with the range, quality, and consistent innovation of Waits. And for those of us who recognize that, "Real Gone" is nothing short of a delight and a revelation (as always.)
