Album Review

Recorded at the Gibson Amphitheatre in California on June 28, 2006, Real Live Roadrunning features live renditions of all of the cuts from Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris' collaboration of the same name, as well as solo cuts from each and Dire Straits classics like "So Far Away" and "Romeo & Juliet." The musicianship is as flawless as expected, but there's not a whole lot to separate the tunes here from their studio sisters. The accompanying DVD is a much better example of the pair's quiet dynamic, allowing both the duo and its talented band a broader spectrum on which to emit their wry tales of love, loss, and life.

Customer Reviews

This is a great concert

This CD (the companion to the DVD of the concert) is a wonderful memento of a performance with no smoke, no mirrors--just pure, great music. Both artists are exceptional musicians with super tight bands, and putting them together was such a treat. Also nice (and surprising) to hear so much of Knopfler's older material, but in a more laid back, Harris-influenced environment. I've played holes in this. (I do not understand the "Clean" tag here at iTunes; implies an "explicit" version exists, and I don't know if one.

Better than the studio album

Do yourself a favor and buy this. This version of Romeo and Juliet is stunning, better than the studio version, in my opinion. Great version of This is Us, If This Is Goodbye. I would buy it just for Romeo and Juliet. Emmylou singing "Why Worry" grows on you, too. She has the voice of an angel.

Single Malt and this album/DVD - nothing better

I listen to a lot of music. This is my first review. This is incredible music. I have had people sit down and watch the DVD and cant believe what they are seeing and hearing. Blows you absolutely away. Sure thing.

Though other performers sold more records and earned greater fame, few left as profound an impact on contemporary music as Emmylou Harris. Blessed with a crystalline voice, a remarkable gift for phrasing, and a restless creative spirit, she traveled a singular artistic path, proudly carrying the torch of "cosmic American music" passed down by her mentor, Gram Parsons. With the exception of only Neil Young — not surprisingly an occasional collaborator — no other mainstream star established...
