Some country singers lean on funny lines, overplay tender lyrics and wink at puns. Not Joe Nichols, whose 2007 release, Real Things, is a low-key wonder. On the opening title cut, stone fireplaces, cold beer, and “old timers telling lies” are just some of the pleasures Nichols convincingly and quietly sings the praises of. “Another Side of You,” one of the album’s most touching songs, is a sweet ode to a wife: stubbed toes, bad coffee and lousy moods, as well as tender romance, flesh out this portrait of a happy married life. “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking” finds Nichols looking for more “real things.” Here the singer lets us know he wants to glimpse the less presentable side of a well put-together woman by asking questions like, “Do You paint your toes ‘cause you bite your nails?” Nichols can loosen up and get rowdy, too — witness the mid-tempo rocker, “Let’s Get Drunk and Fight.” On the closer, “If I Could Only Fly,” Lee Ann Womack joins Nichols for a fine reading of a haunting song by the late, great Blaze Foley.

Joe Does it Again

Joe does it again with a great mix of new and traditional country. He constantly reminds us of country roots and sways away from the hip hop era of new country singers. I have to say this album is a breath of fresh air.

This album is made great by songs like Another Side of You, Real Things and She's all Lady.

Still not "Man With A Memory" but amazing nonetheless!

I first heard Joe on the radio about six years ago. The song was "The Impossible" and it stopped me in my tracks. To this day it is the only song i have ever requested a radio station to play. And to this day i'm still hooked. I don't know what it is, he's more traditional than the contemporary country music i grew up with but he has that voice. A little Keith Whitley, a little Alan Jackson, but it's distinct and it's wonderful. In this, his fourth major label release, Joe shines again. "Who Are You When I'm Not Looking", is the gem of the album in my opinion. It's beautifully written and and delivered with amzing grace. I don't know how it would fair on the radio today though as it seems like it was pulled straight out of a traditional country album two decades ago. Still, here's to hoping it gets released and does well! Download it! Other favorites are "Another Side of You", "Real Things", "It Ain't No Crime" (best guess for his next single), "Ain't Nobody Gonna Take That From Me", and "Let's Get Drunk and Fight". This album, just as every Joe Nichols album, is not for everyone but is a great piece of work by the man George Jones himself has said,"... is the new face of traditional country music". Can't beat that!

Joe Nichols took the roundabout way to country success, scoring his first major hit six years after landing his initial record deal. A native of Rogers, Arkansas, Nichols grew up watching his father play bass in a local country band. He himself played in a rock band during his teenage years but soon came back to country and after high school took a night job as a DJ while supporting himself as a mechanic by day.
