Haunting and Real
Laura is the real deal. A European Sade/Fiona Apple/Alanis mixture of floating melodies that are haunting and beautiful. Just wait till you see her live too... Delivering the same tone and textures. This is a great find. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
Had me at the Nana
As soon I purchased this album, I was blown away by Nana song. Laura Vall is clearly an out of this world talent and this album is flawless.
It's a mush have if you ask me!.
Just an overview of of the album...
Laura Vall has released an album of immense accomplishment… perhaps unparalleled by any other pop artist of recent. "Real" is a CD that is instantly lovable for pop fans as well as someone like myself, who on several occasions have been described as a "Pop Terrorist".
Here are some points that stand out to me:
* ok, I'll just start off with the obvious… Laura's extreme talent as a vocalist. A unique voice that is easily recognizable and refreshingly passionate. At points on the record there are seemingly a whole choir of laura's in the background and I simply can't get enough.
* World class production. Seemingly infinite detail. This thing is dripping with nuance and subtlety. Yes, the tone of every instrument is expertly complimentary to each other, as well as balanced and panned etc to perfection. Everything sounds clear and polished. But it goes way beyond all that… uses of verbs and delays and other effects; as well as the wide range of instruments from the guitar (which is presented in such variety it should be considered as, maybe 11 instruments) and drums/bass to strings/piano and even electronica are used and mixed in a way that exceeds mere professionalism… it's down right artistry.
* The undercurrent of rich harmony on this record reminds me of a great film soundtrack; inciting tenderness, longing and even wonder. Some parts are so soothing or pleasantly unsettling in ambiance… I could be describe it as a hidden album within the album. Come to think of it, if this album were re-released as alternate versions or "re-mixes" (like how Bjork's "Post" was remixed/re-released as "Telegram") I would eagerly buy that as well!
