iTunes Review
1991’s The Reality of My Surroundings was the peak of Fishbone’s career, the moment when it combined the maturity and focus of Truth and Soul with the impulsive creativity of its early years. Even though the album was sprawling piece of work that included a string of musical interludes among its full-length songs, it won the band a wave of commercial success. At a time when the term “alternative” was just beginning to be co-opted by the industry, Fishbone presented an authentic alternative to a musical landscape dominated by Guns N' Roses and Michael Jackson. Fishbone's musical palate was refined in every corner. “Fight the Youth” was heavy, “Pressuer” was angry, and “Everyday Sunshine” was funky. Its incorporation of everything from Metallica to Parliament wasn't tokenistic; it represented musical integration in its most sophisticated form. While other artists were content to make sweeping generalizations about American ghetto life, Fishbone demanded complexity in its commentary.
Customer Reviews
No competiton
This album is an experience like no other. At one point it can jump from swirling, funky psychedelia (So Many Millions) to fast, energetic punk (Pressure) to gospel-tinged soul (Everyday Sunshine). It is Fishbone's masterpiece, and ranks in my top three albums ever. The "If I Were A...I'd" skits add to the experience, as does the disturbing Junkies Prayer. Probably the easiest album for me to listen to from beginning to end, yet it makes me think of all of the plight and horror people can experience just because of where they live or what color they are. An effective album in many ways.
An Outstanding, Immaculate Experience!
The best Fishbone album, along with Truth and Soul. When this was first released, some critics went as far as to compare it to Sgt. Pepper's, and these comparisons were reasonable. A brilliant album --- a fusion of ska and hard rock, creating such a unique sound. This record is less accessible and more frustrating than Truth and Soul, but at least matches it's enjoyability. I cannot say enough about this band. God bless you, Fishbone, and keep up the music! Standout tracks: Fight the Youth, So Many Millions, Pray to the Junkiemaker, Everyday Sunshine, Sunless Saturday.
Forgotten Masterpiece
Sgt Pepper? More Like a Riot goin on. 1991... Maybe the best year for great albums. This one might be the best of the bunch. Maybe in 10 Years some new artist will use this as the basis for a new sound and Reality will get its due. Or maybe someone with some brains will sample The intro from so many millions. With its deep groove, relentless rhythm, and drop dead hook, it remains the most brilliant track of the (barely) pre-grunge alternative era. Buy it and listen over and over.
