Album Review
After rejecting an original score commissioned from avant-garde composer Philip Glass, The Reaping's producers opted for a far safer choice in horror veteran John Frizzell, and while safety and predictability would seem antithetical to the horror genre, Frizzell nevertheless turns in a score aptly suited to the film's apocalyptic subject matter, assembling familiar orchestral, choral, and electronic elements to a create a densely foreboding soundscape. By and large Frizzell shies away from shrieking strings and wailing brass in favor of richly textured sound design that underlines the sinister otherness so essential to the genre, even when more traditional symphonic components are prominent, it's the synthesizers and samples that capture the imagination.

One of the best soundtracks ever created!!!!!!!
A very scary yet beautiful addition to the horror/thriller soundtrack world. The music is very startling at times...scary...and even gentle in a few of them. Some of the instruments are very beautiful, such as the guitar in the first track, "The Incident in Chile). There is some very scary, startling, and somewhat disturbing vocal work in a few tracks, such as "Plague of Flies" and "Locusts". Almost every single song is beautifully thought out, and they all are very, very fun to listen to. STAR RATINGS: ***** = Excellent. Great movie, Great soundtrack
The Reaping is a wonderful movie that I had the oppurtunity to see before us-release at a campus premiere. The soundtrack fits very well, and is actually a second-attempt by the producers, who had originally slated Phillip Glass to write the soundtrack. However, they rejected Glass' work, and hired Frizzell, who did a wonderful job creating a postmodern, neo-gothic work. The music fits perfectly throughout, and is not overbearin, yet at the same time, it has the same effect that Goldsmith created in the original Omen. Original, a welcome breath of fresh air in somewhat tacky horror film soundtracks of late. A highly recommended buy.
Not so crazy about it.
I should say that horror movie soundtracks aren't usually the most interesting scores in the world to me, I guess because they're usually effect-oriented or a little screechy. This is well-produced and has some good moments, but isn't the best music for standalone listening. If you're looking for something dark, but textured & interesting, try picking up Kerry Muzzey's "Lucid" or "Fluid" albums... more interesting, but still on the dark side.
