Blue Stone + Sleepthief = Win

Reason Why was my favorite song from Sleepthief’s new album, Labyrinthine Heart, so I was very pleased when I heard that he’d be releasing some remixes of the song. Some of the other remixes I’ve heard from Sleepthief in the past – such as World Gone Crazy, Eurydice, and The Chauffeur – have been very entertaining and enjoyable; however, if you had the original you really didn’t need to buy all of the remixes unless you were an avid fan and had to have every song put out by Sleepthief (like me). Having said that, I feel very different about this remix EP, Reason Why, which I think is a must have. Each song in this, in my opinion, goes beyond a merely entertaining redo and into the realm of real brilliance. This is some of the best of Sleepthief’s remix work yet.

Reason Why
Reason Why stood out to me right away as by-and-large the masterpiece of the Labyrinthine Heart album. The song is raw and completely honest. It takes a lot more courage to put your heart on your sleeve like Justin Elswick has done with this song. Additionally, the vocalists, Coury Palermo and Zoe Johnston, are world class in their presentation. I think they understand what he is trying to do here and they sing their parts to convey those emotions without restraint. Their voices are a perfect match, and almost blend together identically, to form one, strong voice. The mixture is music to my ears.

Reason Why (Blue Stone Remix)
Collaboration between Sleepthief and Blue Stone was a stroke of brilliance on the part of both groups and their record company, Neurodisc Records. I am just as big of a Sleepthief fan as I am a Blue Stone fan, and seeing these two groups come together and mix their style is just sublime. For those who’ve heard Blue Stone before, you know that their sound is based on throbbing bass lines, eerie vocals, and a mixture of sensual ethereal sounds. Sleepthief’s music, on the other hand, is sunnier in its mood, and is more lyrically oriented with a stronger 80’s influence. Both groups know how to pick the best of vocalists – usually female – and both have a superb and unique style with the use of their synths and productions techniques, which really give their music an edge and provide for some of the best and highest quality audio programming out there. I love Blue Stone’s deep and eerie mood, but I also love Sleepthief’s songwriting and heavenly tones. Unlike techno, which quickly gets old, the type of Electronica produced by Blue Stone and Sleepthief stays interesting the whole song through and for many listens after that. These two groups of skills sets, brought together, created a top notch remix that stands up on its own relative to the original.

Reason Why (Chris Brush Mix)
The first thing that caught my ear was the toy piano sound that you hear at the beginning. This song has sort of a “walking along” sound to it… it’s hard to explain. It reminds me of the moment in a mystery film where you see the main character doing something you don’t understand, but is then revealed – that “ah ha” moment. The simple snare drum adds a lot to this mood. The music to this isn’t complicated, but they managed to capture the mood they were going for and that’s the brilliance in it, especially with what is going on instrumentally during the “I don’t have a heart without you” bit. One of the things I appreciate about Sleepthief’s work (and those that work with him) is that they’re more focused on the essence of the song, what it means, and how it makes you feel, than they are about showing off.

Reason Why (Bryan El Mix)
Bryan El’s sound relies more on pads and sweeps than Sleepthief’s, and reminds me of Yanni, in a way, but this is by no means a bad thing. Bryan El also incorporates some very beautiful and natural sounding pianos in his music that act as the icing on the cake to his synth work. Having said this, his music really sounds heavenly and out of this world. It really lifts your spirit. If you like this remix, he has a song named Solaris which is superb and captures a similar floating-among-the-clouds mood.

Another thing I like about these remixes is that it sounded like Coury Palermo and Zoe Johnston resung the vocal track for each remix. Sleepthief could have "recycled" their audio vocal tracks, but instead he took the time and effort to re-record their vocals for each remix. In doing so, the timbre and dynamics in their voices better match the mood of each remix, which, in my opinion, makes all the difference with regard to the final product.

Appropriately named -- this is the REASON WHY I love Sleepthief!

Silky smooth, lush, and emotionally gripping vocals by Coury Palermo and Zoë Johnston!
Such a great song all around...and very good remixes!

The Blue Stone remix features a thick and rich bassline and driving beat and those candylike Blue Stone signature orchestrations.
The Chris Brush Mix smoothly marches forward with the vocals front and center. Nicely done!
The Bryan EL Mix is bright and uplifting as if Coury and Zoë are floating on a cloud across a lake with beams of light shining down from above.

The Sleepthief original, "Asunder" features amazing layered harmonies of the lovely songstresses who form the Mirabilis duo. Really loving the signature Sleepthief orchestrations -- a bit medieval, slightly erie, altogether intriguingly beautiful.

Beautiful!!!

I absolutely love love love this song!!!!! So beautiful and Zoe has an amazing voice!!!! I'm happy she is hooked up with above and beyond!!!
