iTunes Review

Throughout the ‘80s and well into the ‘90s, Reba McEntire enjoyed an almost-continuous stay in country music’s Top Ten. She reached the Number One spot at least once a year from 1982 through 1998, an impressive chart run by any measure. Reba #1’s testifies to her sure feel for heart-tugging ballads and feisty uptempo tunes, drawn from both Nashville and mainstream pop sources. McEntire achieved her success by projecting strength hidden within vulnerability; in hit after hit, she masterfully dealt with the moral dilemmas faced by a modern woman in love. From her first chart-topper “Can’t Even Get the Blues” through such late ‘90s releases as “I’m a Survivor,” Reba always showed resolve under fire. At capturing a grand sense of sorrow, she remains peerless – in “You Lie,” “And Still,” “The Greatest Man I Never Knew,” and “Does He Love You” (to cite only a few), she rises to near-operatic heights without losing her folksy touch. Also worth noting is her unwavering sense of her audience, revealed in such anthems as “Is There Life Out There” and “What Do You Say.” Track for track, Reba #1’s is as unassailable a hit collection as any country artist can claim.

Customer Reviews

A great collection of some amazingly great songs...

As a proud owner of each of Reba's greatest hits albums, I wasn't quite sure that I would need this latest entrant. Still, after giving it a run through, I've come to the understanding that it's an absolute necessity! First, the calibre of each of these songs is impressive (even after all these years for a number of the especially well-aging singles). The track listing is like a ride through a remarkable career, one that both changed the face of country music and changed along with it (it takes a visionary to know when to keep the pace and when to set it). As if the retrospective wasn't enough on its own, the two new songs are great in their own right, certainly single-worthy, and I'm sure the folks at the recording company are betting they'll earn their place right beside the family of other Reba number ones. Bottom line? This is a first class album that really showcases Reba's talent, and shows clearly the fact that she's still a force to be reckoned with in Nashville.

How do you capture great talent!?

In the span of an almost 30 year career, Reba has recorded hundreds of songs and has a fan base that reaches into the millions. Her talent and success are undeniable and it would be impossible to put together a compilation album that could showcase the true depth of her contribution to country music or one that will please every fan. However, this album is a step in the right direction. It houses some of Reba's greatest works. It's sure to please her steadfast fan base, while opening doors to a new generation of fans. Even the toughest of critics would have a hard time arguing that this album is a "miss". It's a must add to any collection from the fiery red head of country music.
