Album Review

Rebbe Soul-O is an unusual singer/acoustic guitarist that both folk-rockers and world music enthusiasts should take note of. One could describe this promising CD as folk-rock and note the influence of Bob Dylan on "Sister Sarah," "How You Gonna Know" and other songs. But unlike Dylan, Soul-O does his share of singing in Hebrew, often using his Jewish heritage as a source of inspiration; much of the time, the results are fresh-sounding as well as memorable. Other high points of CD are his arrangments of the traditional Jewish songs "Avinu" and "Et Dodim Kalah." This disc let us know that Soul-O was an artist with serious potential.

Amazing (To Clarify)

This is an amazing album with excelent guitar/vocal interpretations of many traditional songs and several by the artist. I was surprised to see the only other review listed this album as one star, but after reading the content of the review I think it was a mistake, and I definitely wanted to give the album justice.

Soulicious

-- bs'd This is a beautiful sampler of the unique and hauntingly beautiful sound that is RebbeSoul. The sweet sound of Tsur Mishelo is the perfect opening for the CD. It is the most beautiful version of this timeless classic I have ever heard. This is followed by very different, but lovely versions of THE SONG OF ANGELS, SISTER SARAH and another favorite of mine, CARLEBACH INTERLUDE.  The second half of the CD seems to be just the right balance. HARACHAMAN is a standard, a prayer that touches everyone's heart as a prayer for peace. RS's rendition touches the soul. The same can be said for THESE DAYS, HOW YOU GONNA KNOW, the beautiful tribute to Shlomo Carlebach OBM, SHALOM RAV and yet another of my favorites, EREV SHEL SHOSHANAIM (Evening of Roses). All are beautiful and RS's guitar seems as though it has a voice of its own.The ending with MY BELOVED and AVINU is perfect. This is different from RebbeSouls's other cds, but just as wonderful. Every CD leaves the listener wanting more of the master musician and grateful for each song he gives us. We await the next CD. MAY WE CONSTANTLY KEEP THE GEULAH IN OUR HEART, MIND AND SOUL AND MAY WE MERIT THE COMING OF MOSHIACH AND THE  BUILDING OF THE BAIS HAMIKDASH TODAY! Mamamitzvah

Biography

Genre: World

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The one-man act Rebbe Soul grew out of founder/producer/vocalist/guitarist Bruce Burger's love for Hebrew music. Burger was introduced to the music as a child but quickly gravitated to rock & roll, which seemed a better vehicle for a guitarist in the early '90s. After kicking around the Los Angeles rock club scene for several years, Burger reacquainted himself with the old Hebrew melodies just for fun. His own emotional response to it, not to mention the overwhelming positive response from colleagues...
