iTunes Review
As a devoted Christian, Lecrae’s primary goal is to glorify Jesus Christ, but as a believer in the power of Southern hip-hop, he wants to make the music that appeals to himself and his generation. Rebel does a surprisingly powerful job of bridging those two seemingly incompatible worlds. Unlike most Christian albums, the music here is as authentic and heavy as anything on Young Jeezy’s last album, only rather than describe life in the trap house, Lecrae rhymes about life in the Lord’s house: “Already dead so forget my flesh,” he says in “Go Hard.” “I done been crossed over see the full court press / I’m a full court mess if the Lord don’t use me / Running from my trials thinkin’ everything’s groovy.” Rather than simply rattle off Bible verses, Lecrae analyzes stories from his personal experience, and shows the insecurity and unhappiness that lie just underneath the material excesses and self-pleasure of modern hip-hop culture. Rebel is smart and passionate, but more importantly it doesn’t condescend to its target audience. As long as Lecrae continues to speak to his peers on their own terms he’s bound to have more people listening.
Customer Reviews
I'm an atheist.
I love rap and I'm an athiest. I noticed that Lecrae's music was in the top 10 on iTunes and after sampling all of the tracks, I've purchased the album. Even though I don't believe in God, I enjoy listening to someone who believes so strongly about something and is able to convey it with such passion through his music. Great job, looking forward to more albums.
How???
Man I am totally speechless right now... how did he do it? I loved his last cd "After the Music Stops" absolutely amazing! So after that i had high and i mean HIGH expectations for this one!... and after just listening to the cd straight through, i can honestly say that this cd not only topped his last one but it made it look flat out silly! I also just listened to some clips from T.I.' s album "Paper Trail" that just also came out, and i believe this cd not only has a way better message but also as far the production, the rhymes, and the beats i think this cd way out preforms it! Alright now to the tracks... 1) Rebel Intro (4-5)- Nice tight beat, good introduction to the album. 2) Don't Waste Your Life (5/5)- Club banga (or church banga) for sure! Probably my favorite track, challenges you to live every second of your life for a purpose, which is Jesus Christ. Cam and Dwanye Tryumf (rapper from London) kill it on this track! 3) Go Hard (4/5)- Tells you to go hard after jesus or don't go at all, and not to live for yourself. Dark beat, Tedashii is a nice compliment and does well in the chorus. 4) Identity (4/5)- Nice smooth beat... Jr is really good in this song. 'Truth good as usual. 5) Indwelling Sin (3/5)- Lecrae being temped and battling with sin. 6) Breathin' to Death (4/5) - Intense song, and very powerful. 7) Truth (4/5) - Talking about the world and spitin' what the real truth is. 8) Desperate (5/5) - Amazing song! The presence of God all over this joint! 9) Change (3/5) - Good song, Crae actually sings in this one. 10) Fall Back (4/5) - Awesome beat, Trip does his thing. 11) Live Free (4/5) - Easy going and upbeat song, about how we are free from sin. 12) Got Paper (5/5) - God or Money? Lecrae's got "Jesus Baby!" 13) I'm a Saint (4/5) - Jesus saved us, and now we are the saints! 14) The Bride (3/5) - We, as the church, are the Bride and we are waiting for the day Jesus comes back! 15) Beautiful Feet (4/5) - Really like the beat, tells stories about how good Jesus is. Overall the Album is spectactular. All the 3's and 4's are still amazing songs but i can't rate all the songs 5!
Lecrae's best effort yet! (detailed review)
Firstly, if you are debating with yourself whether to buy a couple songs or the whole album, STOP NOW, and purchase the whole album! I have been following Lecrae and Reach Records since he came out with his freshman release (Real Talk) years ago. It is a joy to see Lecrae grow as a believer and an artist. This is undoubtedly his greatest outing yet and will challenge the christian and secular hip-hop arena to step they game up. The production and lyricism on this album is incredible. T.I., please peep out Lecrae and see wassup. He has set the bar very high for not just the Christian industry, but also for the secular (step aside T.I., Jeezy, Wayne) TRACK BREAKDOWN: (i'll also provide you with the production (beatmakers) for those who want to know) 1. Rebel Intro - 5/5 (produced by G-styles & Joseph Prielozny) This is an epic intro that introduces what Lecrae means by "Rebel" and it prepares you for the whole album. Sick strings, resonant snares, and impeccable flow. In case you're wondering, that is Pastor Mark Driscoll from Mars Hill Church in Seattle speaking throughout the song. Driscoll says, "If you really wanna be a rebel, read your Bible because no one's doing that...that's the only rebellion left!" 2. Don't Waste Your Life ft. Cam & Dwayne Tryumf 6/5 (Produced by Dion (DFREE) Burroughs) That's right. I gave this track a 6 out of 5! Hand's down, my favorite track on the album. Crae changes his flow multiple times on this track and we brings back his "fast spittin'" style from "Represent" on his first album. Phenomenal! This is obviously influenced John Piper and his awesome book. If John Piper was a hip-hopper, this is how he would rap. haha 3. Go Hard ft. Tedashii 4/5 (Produced by Kadence) Tedashii is a beast. The hook on this track is an anthem! Crae shares personal stories about mission trips. Straight southern beat and would probably bang with some nice subs. The opening line is, "Lord, kill me if I don't preach the gospel!" 4. Identity ft. Da TRUTH & JR 5/5 (G-Styles) This song is about finding our identity in Christ. J.R. kills the hook and it has a neo-soul, jazzy feel that is great to relax and listen to. To our teenage brothers and sisters, this track will help with your insecurities and identity challenges. 5. Indwelling Sin 6/5 (Produced by Dion (DFREE) Burroughs) Amazing track! Short skit before track sets up the whole song. Read Romans 7 before listening to this track! key line: "B.E.T. turns into an addiction to pornography" 6. Breathin' To Death 4/5 (Produced by G-styles) A call to devotion and repentance! Feel the heartcry in this song. 7. Truth 5/5 (Produced by Teddy P) To those of us who believe all truth is relative and all religions are equally valid, Lecrae will smash those erroneous views in this extremely relevant and "Truth"-saturated track! Beat is insane! Good job Teddy P on that production! 8. Desperate ft. Cam 6/5 (Produced by G-Styles) THIS TRACK BROUGHT ME TO TEARS! He pours out his heart into this one. The driving beat and Psalm-influenced lyrics will grab your heart, mind and soul. He will have you meditating on brokenness, repentance, and the mercy of God...If this track doesn't move you, something is wrong. It's actually a toss up b/n this and "don't waste your life" for favorite track. 9. Change 5/5 (Produced by Bobby Taylor) Lecrae kills the hook with his rap-sing style. It is incredible! Challening track that will contend with how you view the world and your whole lifestyle. 10. Fall Back ft. Trip Lee (Produced by G-Styles) This beat is amazing. Electro-synth driven with Lecrae and Trip rippin' da track! He exposes the lies of the media and warns even Christians how the subtle influence of the media can influence you way too much. 11. Live Free ft. Sho Baraka & Jai 4/5 (Produced by J.R.) Experimental sounding track that will definitely have to grow on you. It is a joyful feeling when listening to the hook and reminding us of the freedom from sin and death that Christ has achieved for us through His atonement! 12. Got Paper 5/5 (Produced by K-Drama aka Platinum Tips) "I got Jesus babieeee!!!" "And is sicknin, that God ain't enough we gotta tell um they can get rich quickly" This song will get stuck in your head. Beat is hard, southern, and bumps. It has that classic screwed Houston-style hook. He attacks money-loving worldviews and the lies of the prosperity gospel. Listen to this song to dispel your materialism! 13. I'm A Saint 6/5 (Produced by G-Styles) It is not listed in the track credits, but that is Pastor Eric Mason from Philadelphia speaking on the track. This is an anthem track that will have you grateful for the sainthood of every believer. I am really feelin' Crae's flow on this track. He emphasizes his last word each time with the pattern of the snare, which is pretty sick! The hook is catchy and awesome. He travels from normal flow to sing-song flow in the verses, which is also sick! 14. The Bride 5/5 (Produced by Sixth Sense Music Productions) The electric guitar drives this electrifying track! Crae personifies the church in this song as the Bride of Christ and kills it! This track is sick! We should love the true church of Christ and realize how precious it is in His sight! 15. Beautiful Feet ft. Dawntoya (Produced by J.R.) An extremely touching song. The beat is pristine and the girl singing the vocals has an amazing, angelic voice. This track will challenge you to have a brokenhearted boldness to go out and witness on the corners and proclaim the gospel unto the glory of God! Guys, please support this awesome brother in the Lord and cop this blazin' hot hip-hop project. If you're not a Christian, I challenge you to listen to this sick project. It will inevitably challenge you to make a decision what you believe about Jesus Christ.
