iTunes Review

Ten years into their recording career, Skillet makes its most ambitious bid for mainstream success with 2006’s Comatose. The veteran Contemporary Christian group has long shown an ability to assimilate diverse elements – including grunge and industrial – into its work, and John Cooper’s aggressive lead vocals and versatile songwriting skills have displayed both sincere faith and a keen pop culture sense. With Comatose, Skillet turns up the audio heat considerably, fashioning a fine-polished modern sound, long on meaty guitar hooks and insistent bass lines, displaying a sonic heft exemplified by “Rebirthing” and “Those Nights." As before, the music is the vehicle for messages of hope and salvation — this time, though, the lyrics draw to a greater degree upon Cooper’s personal struggles. “Looking For Angels” and the title track crystallize the album’s theme of striving against spiritual complacency and doubt. Like Chevelle and Switchfoot before them, Skillet aims to make 21st Century Christian rock that beckons to the uncommitted as well as the believer, and Comatose takes a bracing and convincing step towards that goal.

Wow, I cant believe I only found out about these guys now!

Phenominal album, plain and simple. Right along the lines of Red, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Disturbed....etc. Standout tracks are Rebirthing , The Last Night, Comatose(my personal favorite), and Falling Inside The Black. Skillet have crafted a perfect album.....almost. The one problem I have that keeps nagging me is the track "Looking For Angels." Now, I understand that this is probally the most meaningful track on the album, and it does have great lyrics, but, IMHO, a terrible song structure. It kicks off right after "Whispers In The Dark," another hard rock song, ends. So the transition is jarring, to say the least. Not only that, the chorus is just a repetitive la la la looking for angels, la la la song structure. Very repetitive and doesn't make that great of an impression. To add insult to injury, it features a fade out at the end, which is something I don't particularly enjoy to begin with, much less on a weak song, and even less to end a particularly stellar album. It craps out so rapidly that I thought I had downloaded a bad copy. That being said, this is still an awesome album, but as far as ending with a bang, it completely misses the mark.

GREAT!

Rebirthing: great tune, great lyrics, not my favorite song on the album but definitely one of their best.
The Last Night: chorus sticks with you for a loooong time. That is a good thing. :)
Yours To Hold: Favorite song of all Skillet songs. Slow, softer than the others but still rocks. Very emotional. Made me cry. Beautiful.
Better Than Drugs: good one, not my favorite.
Comatose: Awesome. Makes you wanna scream the lyrics as loud as possible. Second favorite Skillet song. Beautiful reminder of our emptiness without Christ.
The Older I Get: Very emotional, made me cry. Beautiful song, but not my favorite. Very good though.
Those Nights: Lots of fun. Great song. I sing the chorus in the shower.
Falling In The Black: Nice song, one of the best Skillet songs. Anthem of desparation.
Say Goodbye: Again, very emotional and made me cry. Great song, but very sad.
Whispers In The Dark: Best love song ever. Rocks hard, gorgeous vocals, awesome lyrics. Love it.
Looking For Angels: This is the only song I dislike. I dont like rap music, though, so some people may really like this one. Mostly rapped, a lot of repetition, but just not my style.

Overall, this album is wonderful. If you arent going to buy the whole thing, at least by Comatose, Those Nights, Yours To Hold, and Whispers In The Dark.
