Epic Envy

Envy's last full length release, Insomniac Doze, gave some hints that the band was transitioning from being one of the top-notch hardcore/post-hardcore bands in the world to a more hybrid post-rock/hardcore band. Recent splits with Thursday and Jesu along the EP Abyssal showed the band in a deeper state of transition. Now, with Recitation the band has moved into a realm that is exclusively their own.

I did not know what to think after the first listening. Being a fan of their older releases and the sheer energy that was present with them, I did miss the force they presented. But upon further listening, especially while walking the dirty streets of Shenyang, China with my iPod firmly attached to my ears, the music seemed to be the perfect theme of my movements and thoughts at those moments. Recitation is a microcosm of the emotions life itself -- there is beauty, hope, pain and disappointment all mixed together and many times happening simultaneously. There are moments in the album that will bring to mind Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros, Mono, Isis, Jesu and many others, but Envy takes those influences and creates their own landscape. While some may be turned off to the fact everything is in Japanese, the band's sincere emotions on this release transcends any language barrier.

One Word.

Beautiful.

Recitation - Review

Any time a band is described as screamo, hardcore, and Japanese, you know its going to be intense. This album is filled with sad, remorseful, bitter, screaming that will envelope you completely. It contains a lot of emotional instrumental buildups to finish with ragingly pain filled vocals. You don't need to understand the language to feel the emotion that pours out this band. I wasn't entranced by all of the songs, but you really must listen to all of "Last Hours of Eternity". Hopefully people will open up and give this album a chance, because it feels different at first.
