iTunes Review
After Murmur turned the Athens, Ga., quartet into mini-stars, R.E.M. didn’t waste time, with Reckoning slipping into stores a short year after that mysterioso debut album. Certainly a less mind-altering experience than its predecessor, Reckoning was hardly a retreat; its often more straightforward charms served to bring another view of the band’s gifts to light. Strong hints of acoustic-based glories to come were present in moments as varied as the countryish college-radio hits “So. Central Rain” and “(Don’t Go Back to) Rockville” and the raga-rock experiment “Time After Time,” while full-on stompers like “Pretty Persuasion” and “Little America” showcased drummer Bill Berry as a cogent musical engine. Through all this, a modesty prevailed, as if a clear decision had been made to simply do the work and go. But the steps R.E.M. was taking were long, hurtling ones.

earlier the better
if you have a sore heart them put this album in your ear and take a walk on a chilly night all alone with a pack of cigs so central rain and rockville will remind you that its your fault that your heart hurts so much youll feel worse and better at the same time and youll fall in love again thanks rem
The Trunk
I saw REM on this tour in '84 and remember Mike Mills and Peter Buck walking around the outside of the Orpheum theater in Boston and signing autographs and talking with the people who got there early (all 10 of us!)--I was really impressed with that. They even wrote back when I sent them a fan letter. Murmur was the roots, Reckoning is the trunk and the rest of the albums are the branches, leaves and flowers. This is the only "pure" REM release, in my book--others may differ.
Incredible
If you're about 35 now, chances are this was your soundtrack to high school, like it was for me. (Along with The Smiths). It's such a classic album. Every song triggers a memory and it's a great, great road trip album.
