Swedish Death Metal Pioneers
I remember reading about Nirvana 2002 back in the early 90's in a fanzine that was dedicated to that glorious Sunlight Sound that bands like Dismemeber and early Entombed brought to such a great number of listeners. I always wanted to get their recordings and always wondered what happened to them. Well now we get the chance.
From the hit the classic sunlight buzz saws cut right into you upon the opening note of Mourning (Projections of A Stained Mind). Sounds like you just found an unreleased track off of "Left Hand Path" or "Like an Ever Flowing Stream". But it's not either.
The sound and production is good especially on the 2009 remixes. Zombiefication has the classic young man spoken word misanthropy in the background that is such an essential element to early Swedish Death Metal songs. These recordings are all demos mostly and one reunion show live track that are part of a scene history that even though not gone,has for the most part unfortunately changed. While Dismemeber are still carrying the torch and bands like Entombed are going back to their roots,along with new bands such as Akerfedt's Bloodbath and Nicke Anderson's Death Breath, Nirvana2002 is like a true step back in time capturing the raw early punk rock laced insanity of this music, but released in 2009.
Unfortunately this album would have been a 5 had all of the songs recieved remastering and not just three, since some of these demos are rough in places and will therefore not flow as beautiful as other early full production Swedish DM. None the less a must buy for any fan of Entombed, Dismember, Edge of Sanity or Bloodbath. Know your roots.

This is essentially as good as, and predates the material off of, Entombed's Left Hand Path and Dismember's Like an Everflowing Stream. Truly masterful and a great look at one of the three or four essential DM scenes of the late 80s and early 90s. By some unfortunate twist of fate Nirvana 2002 never reached the same audience as Entombed, Dismember, At The Gates etc. to whom they were contemporaries and friends. However through a series of serendipitus events, we are brought this early slice of excellent death metal bliss that is on par with the early works of many of the genres greatest bands. N2k2 is definitely an unappreciated gem of the Swedish Death Metal scene.
