iTunes Review
Utilized by everyone from Amy Winehouse to Eminem, “rehab” has become a popular theme and catchphrase in modern popular music. However, the Christian rapper Lecrae completely repurposes the word for his fourth album. A conceptual work about the determination and rewards of transformation, Rehab is captivating, even for a non-Christian audience. Rather than resort to preachy slogans, Lecrae’s descriptions of temptation are sharp and intricate. “Killa” never explicitly names a specific vice, yet vividly translates its seductive power: “These honey dip lies mesmerize me / Pride’s got its crooked fingers twisted all inside of me… Evil looks so lovely covered in her lace of lies / And the silky smooth seduction just manipulates my mind.” Inevitably, the album’s protagonist is soon redeemed by the glory of Jesus, but even when he basks in the light of the Lord, Lecrae avoids clichés. Most importantly, the music is heavy, not corny. The album’s centerpiece is “Used to Do It Too,” a church sing-along with all the muscle of a T.I. trap anthem.
Customer Reviews
This CD needs some Rehab, cuz it is sick!
It's never ceased to amaze me how powerful the lyrics of Christian rap can be, yet how unprofessional the production & beats can get. But 2010 has brought reform to the genre. First it was Sho Baraka kickin' it with 'Lions & Liars', a bold venture with some amazing quality. Then came Trip Lee with 'Between Two Worlds'- it was the young guy toppin anything that'd come out of the 116 clique so far with beats that could pass as Ludacris's or T.I.'s. Third came the new & improved PRO with 'Redemption'. If you look at PRO's 1st album, you'll find it is very self-centered. But with some mentoring from Lecrae, he came back strong with real lyrics & even harder beats, earning him my title of the Young Jeezy of Christian rap (which I've just been waiting to deal out). 'Redemption' is dope; go check it out some time & give him some props.
And now comes the leader of the pack- Lecrae. I'm listenin' to Rehab right now on the Rapzilla.com listening party & I gotta tell you, I'm blown away. The metaphors and ways he found to rhyme things is absolutely beyond anything I've seen outta 116 yet! One thing I'm especially impressed with is how he kept the soft songs catchy which Christian rap doesn't exactly have the best reputation for. But the lyrics are just downright stellar and the beats are professional, crunk, thought through, original, and have amazing production. I'd recommend: Killa, Divine Intervention, Used to Do It Too, High, New Shalom, & 40 Deep. But there's really not a track on here that's not amazing!
Let's face it- Christian rap will take over at some point or another. I mean, the beats have gotten as good (if not better) than any secular rapper out there, & the secular lyrics can never come close to toppin' this.
This is life-changing stuff goin on right here and I can't believe I've been blessed to witness it.
Lecrae, if you ever read this I just want you to be encouraged to keep on keeping on. You're music is awesome & motivates me, a teenage guy, to go and be on fire for Christ. Never let up! You da' man!!
Peace Out!
He's BACK!!!
