Different Trains
Reich at his best. This is a perfect marriage of all his considerable talents. The spoken word samples he has long played with are used to great effect here. Reich has given these people a voice alongside the repetitive, complex music and haunting sounds of trains, sirens etc. Not party music. But, hear it once, and it sticks with you. Brilliance and genius are overused words. Let's reserve them for special occasions - such as this.
A noble attempt.
I gave this four stars only because the Kronos recordings of these works are still the gold standard. It's still a decent recording and I'm thilled that someone finally recorded the duet for 2 violins and orchestra.
